NBA Preview - Philadelphia 76ers

2014-15 Review
As relatively awful as the 76ers were last season they still weren't the worst team in their division thanks to the woeful New York Knicks. The 76ers continued their youth movement last season by once again remaining patient with their draft picks and player development. While many folks were anxious to see what new draftee Joel Embiid could do, the anticipation will have to wait another year as Embiid didn't suit up at all for Philly last season and he isn't likely going to see any game action this year either.

New Additions

Jahlil Okafor
Okafor is the newest draftee to join the rebuilding 76ers and he adds size, versatility and youth to an already inexperienced 76ers front court. Okafor is definitely a top-rated prospect, much like the two collegiate Stars taken in the previous two drafts; however, he definitely also has the highest expectations of the bunch due to his developed game and skill around the basket.

Nik Stauskas
Stauskas was acquired from the Sacramento Kings in a big nine player deal that really boiled down to a salary dump for Sacramento. A sweetener in that salary dump was the second-year Stauskas who hadn't yet had much of an opportunity in Sacramento. Stauskas fits in nicely with what the 76ers are doing and that is stockpiling young talent. There will always be a need in the NBA for absolute knock down shooters and if Stauskas can become a consistent talent like that then this salary-dump sweetener could pay big dividends for the 76ers as they move forward.

Key Losses

There really weren't any key losses for the 76ers in terms of free agency. The biggest loss was really one that hasn't even proven himself to be an NBA commodity yet. The news that Joel Embiid will likely miss all of the 2015-16 season is not encouraging for Philly fans as even the most patient were expecting to see the former third-overall pick finally get on the court.

Biggest Strength

The biggest strength for the 76ers is still their weakest link as the youth movement has generated three top-tier talents; however, they are still so inexperienced that the benefits aren't truly known. The progression of Nerlens Noel into a respectable power forward is certainly encouraging and the expectations on Okafor are even higher at this point. The duo of Okafor and Noel will cause some problems for teams as their youthful athleticism will certainly compensate for some of the lack of experience.

Biggest Weakness
The 76ers either seem to attract the players coming off major injuries or they simply enjoy risking out the signings of such players. They currently have Tony Wroten coming off a torn ACL injury, Pierre Jackson coming off a torn Achilles injury, Kendall Marshall who is also coming off a torn ACL and of course Embiid who is lost for the year likely.

Bottom Line
The 76ers were very fortunate to not finish the 2014-15 season in the basement of the Atlantic Division; however, thanks to the woeful New York Knicks they did just that. This season, they won't be so lucky as the Knicks have improved considerably while the 76ers have done nothing to significantly improve their on-court product. The 76ers will have their entertaining nights and fair share of highlights reels in the form of dunks courtesy of Noel and blocks from Okafor, yet none of those will be enough to prevent the 76ers from being basement dwellers, not only in the Atlantic but also for the entire league.

Fantasy Slant

Most Overrated

Robert Covington

Covington is basically a 6'9" small forward who scored a lot of points by abusing smaller opponents at or near the basket. That flexibility for Covington isn't going to be as prevalent this year as the big bodied Okafor will be dominating the painted area due to his inability to play anywhere else. Covington will be forced to show off his mid-range game as defenses are going to let him have looks in lieu of doubling down on the inexperienced Okafor.

Most Underrated

Nerlens Noel

Now that Noel has some help in terms of height, he will be able to play more power forward type rolls than that of the centre. In his rookie season, Noel nearly averaged a double-double which is no small feat considering the lack of talent surrounding him. His defense and passing abilities do generate some decent fantasy values as well and as he develops those shot block totals will climb. Noel is not the cheapest fantasy option out there; however, this year he will actually perform up to those lofty salary demands.

Biggest Surprise

Pierre Jackson

Jackson is coming off a serious Achilles injury that cost him all of last season. Jackson should be ready to go this year and he will see some game action early in the season. Factor in that Tony Wroten has long been rumoured to be on the trade block and it all adds up to Jackson getting a chance to shine in Philly. Jackson will be a bottom-tier fantasy option and he should open the season at a minimum or near minimum priced point guard option on FanDuel.
