The Oklahoma City Thunder are squarely focused on their current run towards and NBA championship as they have all that they can handle with the pesky Memphis Grizzlies. Since the Thunder have come into their own with the maturation of Kevin Durant andRussell Westbrook the club has experienced solid success.
With that success they have posted great regular season records which has caused them to be quite low in the NBA draft. The Thunder haven’t had great success in drafting with the late picks as they haven’t really found that draft day gem that other teams passed on. The best of their recent picks has been Reggie Jackson who was taken 24th overall back in the 2011 Entry Draft. Jackson of course has reached recent popularity as he pretty much won game four of the Thunder’s current playoff series.
The Thunder have Durant under contract for another two years, Westbrook has three years left on his current deal and Serge Ibaka has four years left. With these three under contract the Thunder are going to go hunting for role players like Jackson who can be the spark plugs when called upon.
Biggest Draft Day Need
Ever since the departure of James Harden to the Houston Rockets the Thunder have been without that dynamic scorer who can come off the bench and provide reliable minutes and that additional scoring punch. They have tried to replace Harden; however, the guy they got Kevin Martin only stuck around for a year before bolting for bigger dollars in Minnesota.
Now the Thunder aren’t likely going to find a player of Harden or Martin’s skills and abilities right off the hop, but they can certainly take a shot at it. The Thunder need a shooter and scorer and a solid fit for this role could very well be C.J. Wilcox from the University of Washington.
Wilcox is a four-year collegiate player who benefited greatly from his time in the NCAA. He is a great catch and shoot two guard who has decent footwork and above average ball handling skills. He has a long wingspan despite his 6’5” height and he is athletic enough to play defense on opposing two-guards.
The Thunder need a catch and shoot guy who can play the pick and roll and let them fly when his number is called. The Thunder would do well in snagging Wilcox at the end of the first round as he will likely be available to them.
