Rudy Gay Trade and the Fantasy Implications

The Rudy Gay saga in Memphis is officially over. After months of speculation and conflicting reports the Memphis Grizzlies have pulled the trigger on a deal involving their star player. In the six player trade that was finally consummated today between the Toronto Raptors, the Memphis and Grizzlies and the Detroit Pistons; Gay is headed to Toronto.

The trade sees the Raptors part with free-agent to be Jose Calderon who is on his way to Detroit and up and comer Ed Davis who is going to Memphis. The Pistons part with Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye who are both headed to Music City as well; while the Raptors are getting the centerpiece to the deal in Rudy Gay.

Let’s break this down from a fantasy perspective and take a look at how this will affect some player’s standings.

The two biggest fantasy impacts will be felt on the Toronto Raptors. Rudy Gay is going to be the go-to-guy on the floor and will be looked upon to shoulder the scoring load. This could mean that DeMar DeRozan and Andreas Bargnani will be seeing less of the ball as they were once accustomed too.

Now I remain thoroughly unimpressed by Bargnani from a fantasy perspective. He has potential to be a producer yet he is far too comfortable playing too far away from the basket and settling for jumpers. DeRozan is going to have to adjust his game accordingly as it is unlikely that he will continue to get upwards of 17 shots per night. Watch for DeRozan’s scoring numbers to go down while his rebounding and assist stats should increase as he adjusts his game to having Gay on the floor with him.

Rudy Gay should be able to replicate his Memphis success North of the border. I’d expect his scoring to go up to around 20 ppg while his rebounding and assist number will likely hold constant at 6 rpg and 2.6 apg.

A player whose fantasy value is sure to rise given the departure of Jose Calderon is Kyle Lowry. Lowry has been sharing time with Calderon at the point guard spot and he hasn’t been able to fully immerse himself into the offense as much as he would have liked. Now that the point guard spot is all his, watch for the explosive and hard-cutting Lowry to return. His fantasy value will go up and his scoring should see a nice bump back to around 15 ppg while his assist numbers should get a boost as well up to over six a game.

Now that he is Motown bound, Jose Calderon is no longer the beneficiary of the complimentary pieces he had around him in Toronto. Detroit is far more of a post-up style offense and Calderon’s fantasy value will take a dip because of this. Throw in the fact that Calderon is clearly not in the Piston’s future plans as Brandon Knight has emerged as the point guard of the future and Calderon’s worth has just cooled considerably.

The player in this trade who is likely to see the biggest drop in terms of immediate fantasy worth is Ed Davis. He was a very serviceable player for the Raptors during his tenure there averaging over 30 minutes a night, 9.7 ppg and 6.7 rpg. These minutes and stats figure to take a huge hit now that Davis is playing behind Zach Randolph in Memphis. Unless the Grizzlies plan on using a Randolph, Davis and Marc Gasol front line; then Davis is going to be coming off the bench and his production will drop off dramatically.
