The NFL regular season has officially begun, and there will be plenty of teams carrying expectations into Week 1. All 32 teams will begin on even ground, but many have questions surrounding them and other do not.
With a few days before the first Sunday of the season, let’s break down the Top 10 storylines entering Week 1 of the regular season.
1. Can Peyton Manning repeat his strong 2013?
We watched as Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns last year, but it will be tough for him to top those numbers. With Wes Welker out for part of the season and Eric Decker a member of the New York Jets, it will be interesting to see how well Manning does.
However, he tends to make names of the receivers he throws to and not the other way. Still, the Denver Broncos are worth watching.
2. Will Chip Kelly’s offense continue to thrive?
Kelly added Darren Sproles to the fold, but lost DeSean Jackson to the Washington Redskins. Sproles will certainly add an element of quickness out of the backfield, but Jackson takes away one of the best vertical attacks in the league.
Jordan Matthews, the Eagles’ draft pick, could play a big role in this offense if it struggles.
3. Will Michael Sam find his way onto the Dallas Cowboys’ roster?
Sam’s battle for a position on the St. Louis Rams roster was played out all over the national media, but he was eventually and denied a spot on their practice squad. The Cowboys decided to take a shot on the defensive end out of Missouri.
Sam will join the practice squad, but a weak Cowboys defensive line could use some help. He could factor into the line by the end of the season.
4. How will Derek Carr fare in his Oakland Raiders debut?
Carr was the fourth quarterback taken in this year’s NFL Draft, but he’ll be the first to start Sunday against the Jets. He was strong in the preseason, which helped him overtake Matt Schaub for the starting job before the season.
Carr will have high expectations, but the Raiders offense ranked 23rd last season, so it could be a long season yet again.
5. Will Brian Hoyer prove that he earned the starting spot?
The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback battle was the story of the offseason and into the preseason. Hoyer beat out rookie Johnny Manziel for the job, but neither did a splendid job in the preseason.
Hoyer begins the season against a strong Pittsburgh Steelers defense, which could generate even more doubt in the mind of Browns fans.
6. Is Robert Griffin III 100 percent ready?
Griffin III had a lackluster 2013 season after returning from his ACL injury a little too early. He has told the media that he feels completely healthy, but he threw for just 141 yards and added two interceptions in the preseason.
Kirk Cousins is a reliable backup that could find playing time again this year if Griffin III struggles in the spotlight.
7. Will Cam Newton find chemistry with his new wide receivers?
Newton lost most of wide receiving corps from last season, including Brandon LaFell and Steve Smith. Now, he must gel with a group of inexperienced receivers and a veteran in Jerricho Cotchery.
Newton may find Kelvin Benjamin early and often, as the rookie is tall and could pose a threat to opposing defenses.
8. Will Bernard Pierce fill the hole left by Ray Rice?
As everyone knows by now, Rice was suspended by the NFL for two games. With his loss, the Baltimore Ravens are depending on a duo of Pierce and Lorenzo Taliaferro to carry the load until he gets back.
Pierce ran for 436 yards and two touchdowns last season, but he’ll need to step it up for the Ravens to be successful.
9. With Rob Gronkowski back, how good are the New England Patriots?
Gronkowski has showed that, when he plays 16 games, he is one of top players in the league. Without him Brady hasn’t fared anywhere close to as well.
In 2011, Gronkowski caught 17 touchdowns passes and gained 1,327 yards en route to a Super Bowl appearance.
10. Are the New Orleans Saints truly Super Bowl candidates?
Many have labeled the Saints as a team that could challenge the Seattle Seahawks for an NFC title. With Drew Brees at quarterback, this is always a possibility, but this year seems increasingly promising.
With Jimmy Graham signed and Jairus Byrd helping what could be a strong defense, the Saints might have a complete team.
