10 Biggest Stories From Week 16 of the NFL Season

Browns Turned Down By Rex Grossman

With the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation getting worse and worse, the Browns turned to an unlikely name. Brian Hoyer is nursing a shoulder injury and rookie Johnny Manziel has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Browns have called journeyman Rex Grossman. Grossman, however, didn’t think it wise to take the offer. Apparently the two sides couldn’t figure anything out since Grossman is hosting family for the holidays. The Browns have been turned down by Rex Grossman because he has family in for the holidays. Let that sink in for a second.

Geno Smith Thinks Coaching Change Could Be Good

On Monday, Jets quarterback Geno Smith said that moving on from head coach Rex Ryan would be “a tough thing to do, but we are professionals and we have to do it. A change could be good for us all.” What Geno might not realize is that if a new coaching staff comes in they might not want to move on to a new quarterback, someone they’re able to draft and groom from the beginning. Geno should be careful what he wishes for.

Johnny Manziel Ruled Out With A Hamstring

The Johnny Manziel saga of 2014 is now officially over. Browns head coach Mike Pettine told reporters on Monday that Manziel suffered a severe hamstring injury against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and has been ruled out of this week’s game. Manziel got injured just before halftime after taking a big hit from Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly on a quarterback keeper. One of the biggest knocks on Manziel coming into the league has been his lack of size and running around like he did in college would get him killed in the NFL. This injury certainly doesn’t do anything to quiet those critics.

Dominic Raiola Suspended For One Game For Stomp

The Detroit Lions’ center, Dominic Raiola, has been suspended by the NFL for one game due to what appeared to be a blatant stomp on the ankle of Chicago Bears defensive lineman Ego Ferguson. Raiola claimed it was an accident after the game but his history leads us to believe it wasn’t. From what players have said about Raiola, he’s not a great person. Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall had this to say about him after Sunday’s game, “He should be banned from the NFL. This guy is a dirty player, and he’s a worse human being.”

Jay Cutler Back In As Starter

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been given one more opportunity to either convince the Bears organization that he can lead them to the promised land or audition for the other 31 teams out there. The team announced that Jimmy Clausen will not be able to finish out the season due to a concussion he sustained in Sunday’s game. Rookie David Fales will serve as Cutler’s backup this week.

Logan Thomas Will Get The Start

With the Arizona Cardinals doing everything they can at the quarterback position to keep this team afloat, head coach Bruce Arians said on Monday that he is going to give rookie Logan Thomas the nod for their Week 17 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. This will be the Cardinals’ fourth starting quarterback of the year.

Cowboys Win NFC East in Dominating Fashion

With the Philadelphia Eagles losing to the Washington Redskins on Saturday afternoon, all the Cowboys needed to do was win one of their final two games or the Eagles lose their final game. Well, the Cowboys didn’t want it to come down to Week 17 for another year. So they went out and beat the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 42-7, clinching the NFC East and giving them a shot at a first-round bye

Patriots Secure First-Round Bye

With the Patriots narrowly escaping their game with the New York Jets with a win, the Patriots become the first team in NFL history to secure a first-round bye in five consecutive seasons. For the Patriots to secure home field advantage throughout, they’ll need to win their final game or have the Denver Broncos lose one of their final two games. If the AFC road to the Super Bowl has to travel through New England, it’s going to be tough for anyone but the Patriots to win the AFC.

It’s Official: Winner of NFC South Will Be Sub-.500

The New Orleans Saints entered Week 16 with a 6-8 record and in control of the NFC South. They also had the chance to finish the season with an 8-8 record. However, a loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday made it definite that no matter who wins the NFC South, they will have a worse record than 8-8. Not only that, they’ll be hosting a playoff game against a team that has ten or eleven wins.

Philip Rivers Playing With Bulging Disc

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has been playing with a bulging disc in his back. It flared up about two or three weeks ago and it was so bad he was forced to get emergency outside treatment. It got so bad that he thought about shutting it down for the year. According to reports, offseason surgery is possible for Rivers. Hopefully for the Chargers the surgery can wait.
