Peyton Manning Breaks All-Time Touchdown Record
On Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke the all-time touchdown record previously held by Brett Favre. Manning went into the game needing three touchdowns to break the record. He had that many by halftime. The Broncos went on to win the game 42-17.
Rams Cut Wide Receiver Austin Pettis
The St. Louis Rams waiver wide receiver Austin Pettis on Monday. Pettis spent the past three seasons with the Rams averaging 31.6 catches per season in those three seasons. He was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft and has been underwhelming since. He’ll likely find a job somewhere in the NFL but doubtful he has a significant impact.
Percy Harvin Traded to the Jets
In the most shocking news of the year so far, the Seattle Seahawks traded wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets on Friday. Harvin was easily the most dynamic player on the Seahawks’ roster and was someone that opposing offenses had to game plan for. While it was initially shocking as to why they would trade Harvin while their offense is struggling, more and more reports started to come out about how Harvin was extremely confrontational with his teammates (apparently Harvin even punched fellow wide receiver Golden Tate the day before the Super Bowl last season). The Seahawks can’t be happy with what they got in return for Harvin (a conditional seventh round pick) considering what they had to give up to get him just over a year ago.
Kirk Cousins Benched for Colt McCoy
In the first half of the Washington Redskins’ game against the Tennessee Titans, Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins didn’t exactly have his best performance. In fact, his performance was so bad that head coach Jay Gruden decided to bench him. In his place was Colt McCoy, who ended up leading the Redskins to a victory. Gruden has said already that if previous starter Robert Griffin III was unable to go for their Monday football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, McCoy would be the one getting the start. With an extended amount of starts, it has become pretty clear that Cousins just can’t get the job done as a starter in this league.
Daniel Kilgore Out For Season
The 49ers lost in a big way Sunday night against the Broncos. However, their biggest loss probably came when starting center Daniel Kilgore went down for the season. Kilgore has been having a very good year and now makes an already thin offensive line even thinner with injuries. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has already said that rookie center Marcus Martin will get the first opportunity to take over the starting role. Martin has a lot of talent and will have an extra week to prepare himself since the 49ers are now in their bye week.
Evan Mathis Cleared to Practice
After being placed on injured reserve – designated to return, Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis has been cleared to practice. This is very good news for the Eagles, who must be dying to get Mathis back since their offensive line has been riddled with injuries so far this season. Mathis can’t play until Week 10 but having him be able to practice is a huge step in the right direction.
Paul Posluszny Out For Season
The Jacksonville Jaguars finally got their first win of the season on Sunday. However, they suffered a much bigger loss in the big picture. Linebacker Paul Posluszny is now out for the season due to a torn pectoral muscle. Posluszny is the leader for that defense and will certainly be missed as this team has just started finding signs of life.
Brian Orakpo Tears His Pec
Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo hasn’t been having a very good season so far. On Sunday his season got a lot worse. Orakpo is done for the year with a torn pectoral. This isn’t Orakpo’s first torn pectoral, he also had his season ended after only two games in 2012 due to a torn pectoral. This is a tough blow for someone in their contract year trying to show everyone what he can do. Orakpo won’t have that chance this season.
Rookie Kyle Fuller Suffers Broken Hand
Chicago Bears rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller suffered a broken hand and a hip pointer this past Sunday. As of right now it’s unclear how long he’ll be out for. If it turns out he needs to be out for an extended period of time the Bears’ secondary is really going to suffer.
Cowboys Pick Up Sixth Straight Victory
The Dallas Cowboys are now 6-1 on the season and surprising everyone. People thought their defense would be worse than last season’s but through the first seven weeks of the season they have been playing very well. On top of that, they’ve finally decided to commit to the run after all these years. With DeMarco Murray running the ball the way he’s been running it, this offense has been very hard to stop. I fully expect Dallas to make it seven in a row after their Monday night game this week against the Washington Redskins.
