2012 NFL Playoffs: Brief Review Wildcard Weekend

As fellow eDraft writer Jessica Kleinschmidt indicated on Twitter last night, "NFL has an elite eight, right?" I guess you could say six elite teams as well as the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens. Though, it is important to note that both teams actually won games this weekend.

Let's take a quick gander at each of these four games.

Houston Texans 19, Cincinnati Bengals 13

This wasn't the prettiest game all the way around. Andy Dalton was a complete disaster in his second career postseason start. He completed just 14-of-30 passes with zero touchdowns and one interception. Dalton started the game by completing just four of his 10 passes in the first half in route to negative passing yards. He never rebounded and had the single worst game of the weekend in terms of stats.

Meanwhile, Matt Schaub didn't do too much either. He handed the Bengals their only touchdown of the game on a ridiculous decision in the second quarter. Leon Hall returned the interception 21 yards and gave Cincinnati a 7-6 lead.

Arian Foster was on top of his game. The Pro Bowl running back tallied 174 total yards on a whopping 40 touches. I just wonder how much he will have in the tank next week against New England. As it is, Houston really needs to play better football if it is going to advance to its first AFC Championship Game.

Green Bay Packers 24, Minnesota Vikings 10

Needless to say, Joe Webb being forced into starting this game due to a Christian Ponder injury had a major impact on the outcome of the game. That being said, it was pretty clear that Minnesota came into the playoffs as the worst of the 12 teams. It just doesn't have the talent, top to bottom, in order to compete with the best the NFL has to offer.

Back to Webb for a second. Nerves might have played a role, but he wasn't good at all. He struggled making secondary reads and displayed a lack of accuracy throughout the game.

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers weren't too impressive either. They converted just 3-of-14 third downs and tallied just 11 total yards on their final five drives. That will not work Saturday night against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick. I really don't know what to make of this performance considering that Green Bay wasn't playing a playoff caliber football team.

Baltimore Ravens 24, Indianapolis Colts 9

If Ray Rice doesn't lose his first two fumbles of the entire season, Baltimore wins this game going away. It was clearly the better team against an inferior Colts opponent. In total, Baltimore recorded 441 yards as Joe Flacco had one of his most impressive performances in recent history.

With that in mind, Baltimore did yield 25 first downs and 419 yards in Ray Lewis' return to action. The future Hall of Fame linebacker tallied 13 tackles in his final game at M&T Bank Stadium.

I just don't see Baltimore, who doesn't play too well away from home, going into Denver and defeating the Broncos this upcoming weekend. All the factors are working against it.

Seattle Seahawks 24, Washington Redskins

Well, that was a downer for those of us who expected a great game between Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson. After opening up a 14-0 lead, a hobbled RGIII just wasn't able to perform up to par due to what now seems to be a serious kneed injury. He didn't have what it take, at least physically. In the end, Kirk Cousins had to come in and replace RGIII.

Wilson led Seattle to the final 24 points of the game in a dominating performance on both sides of the ball. Again, it is hard to gauge this performance considering how injured RGIII was throughout the game.

On the other hand, Marshawn Lynch was up to his old tricks. He tallied 132 rushing yards on 20 carries and really got Seattle going on offense following a slow start. Seattle now heads to Hotlanta to take on Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Should be a good one.
