The Buffalo Bills head into the 2013 draft with a new head coach and a laundry list of needs. With only six selections, they’ll have to make the most of what they have. Because of the extreme depth of this year’s class, if they play their cards right; the Bills will be just fine.
Let’s take a look at eDraft’s mock draft for the Buffalo Bills.
First Round (Eighth Overall): Chance Warmack - Guard, Alabama
I have to believe the Bills won’t reach for quarterback here, but instead will look to address the loss of Andy Levitre to the Tennessee Titans. Warmack is the best guard available this year, and is talented enough to immediately replace Levitre’s output.
Second Round (Ninth): Ryan Nassib - Quarterback, Syracuse
By now everyone knows the connection here. New Bills’ head coach Doug Marrone was Nassib’s former coach at Syracuse and Marrone feels that Nassib puts the Bills in the best position to win. I honestly feel like Nassib isn’t worth a pick until the middle of the fourth round, but if the Bills really need to have him, this is the place to do it.
Third Round (Ninth): Ryan Swope - Wide Receiver, Texas A&M
No matter who the starting quarterback is next season in Buffalo, they need to add more weapons to the passing game to compliment Stevie Johnson. Swope is a talented pass catcher and great value here for Buffalo.
Fourth Round: (Eighth): Dwayne Gratz - Cornerback, Connecticut
The Bills need help in the secondary, and Gratz can fit in very nicely. He’s a cover corner that can stay with receivers on the outside and in the slot, hold his own in zone coverage and is stout against the run. Buffalo could line Gratz up on the outside opposite of Leodis McKelvin or start him out as the nickel corner.
Fifth Round (10th): A.J. Klein - Inside Linebacker, Iowa State
Kelvin Sheppard is Buffalo’s only middle linebacker ranked in Pro Football Focus’ top 50, with an overall grade of -5.0; so obviously, they need help here. Klein is an impressive and versatile player that’s good blitzing, against the run and in coverage and by the beginning of the season could step into the starting job. If not, he’ll still be an impact special teams player and will definitely rotate in at linebacker quite a bit.
Sixth Round (Ninth): Mychal Rivera - Tight End, Tennessee
Despite having Scott Chandler on the roster, Buffalo general manager Buddy Nix has publicly said they’d like to add a pass-catching difference maker. Rivera is a big, physical receiver that can line up all over the field. NFL teams seem to be trying to emulate the New England Patriot’s successful two tight end formations and Rivera would definitely allow the Bills to do just that. Not to mention, he’ll add yet another weapon to (likely) new quarterback Nassib.
