2013 NFL Draft: Alec Ogletree Scouting Report

Former Georgia linebacker, Alec Ogletree is an enigmatic and divisive prospect.  On one hand, he’s one of the most talented linebacker prospects in his class, but on the other; his multiple off-field issues are surely a big concern for all 32 NFL teams.  It will be interesting to see where Ogletree ends up and if he can move on from previous transgressions.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at our scouting report for the former Bulldogs’ safety-turned-linebacker.

Ht Wt Class Ranking Projection
6'2" 242 Junior 46 Second Round

Strengths

Speed: Ogletree has mind-blowing straight-line speed, possibly the best of all linebackers in this year’s class; as evident by his 4.70 second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.  He can close a ton of ground incredibly quickly and has an explosive first step.

Instincts: Being a former safety, Ogletree has a better big-picture sense of the field than most “in-the-box” players.  He has amazing instincts for what the play is and where the ball is going to be. As far as linebackers go, he might have the best pre-play read skills in this year’s draft.

Hit Power: Probably the first thing you will notice when watching Ogletree, is the mind-blowing speed, strength and ferocity in each of his hits.  When Ogletree lowers his shoulder and launches, ball carriers need to look out.  In addition, Ogletree is always looking to punch or knock the ball lose when going for a hit; a rare and exceptional trait in a prospect his age.

Pass Coverage: Another aspect that can be attributed to his previous time at safety, Ogletree is above-average in pass coverage.  He is great in zone and can hold his own in man coverage against almost all receivers, tight ends and running backs.

Weaknesses

Off Field Issues: Unfortunately, Ogletree is knee deep in off-field problems.  First, he was suspended four games during his senior season for allegedly failing multiple drug tests.  Then just a week before the scouting combine, Ogletree was pulled over and arrested for DUI.  These issues will surely raise a ton of red flags for teams on draft day, and will likely cause Ogletree to slide much further than he would like.

Tackling: The one big, glaring problem with Ogletree’s game is his tackling ability: He’s terrible at wrapping the ball carrier up.  Instead, he constantly tries to launch shoulder-first for an explosive hit and jar the ball loose. Sometimes this works with devastating efficacy, but other times; it’s an utter disaster.  Ogletree needs to spend extensive time with an NFL coaching staff to work on his technique.

Bottom Line

Ogletree is one of the most talented linebackers in this year’s class and has the ability to play multiple positions in different schemes.  But his severe and very worrisome off-field problems, will cause him to slide quite a bit on draft day, possibly out of the first round entirely.  Ogletree will need to go to a team with a strong support system for “troubled” players so he can stay out of trouble and grow as a player.
