2014 NFL Draft: Teams Potentially Looking to Trade Down

Every year when we get close to the NFL draft we start to hear more and more rumors. We hear rumors of teams wanting to trade up and rumors of teams wanting to down. This year won’t be any different. With a class that is as deep as this one is it would make sense for teams to want more picks to try and trade down so that they can fill more holes on their team. Teams who miss out on the top quarterbacks may try and trade down lower into the first round where they can still get their guy and get an extra pick or two. Here is a look at the teams that are most likely going to try and trade down.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams own two of the first thirteen picks, but I’m not sure there is anyone at two that they will want to take. Jeff Fisher isn’t known for picking offensive linemen high and they may not see JaDeveon Clowney as a fit for what they need. If they get a good offer for the second pick from someone wanting to move up and get either Clowney or one of the big quarterbacks then they have to think about pulling the trigger. That would then give the Rams the extra picks from this trade on top of the picks they have left from the Robert Griffin III trade to help build their roster. I give this one a good chance of happening.

Oakland Raiders

This may be a surprise to some, but I expect the Raiders to listen to calls unless Clowney or their top quarterback falls to them. They have a lot of needs on their team and more picks in a draft like this could be huge for them. One draft isn’t likely to make them a playoff contender unless they sign some big time free agents, but a great draft this year will certainly help. Many have said this is the deepest draft in possibly 25-30 years and if the Raiders can add some extra picks in it, they would be wise too.

Minnesota Vikings

Much like the Raiders, if the quarterback that the Vikings want doesn’t fall to them at eight, it would be smart of them to try and trade back and pick up some more picks rather than reaching for a quarterback at eight. The Vikings have other needs as well, like a cornerback, but there isn’t a corner worth the eighth pick either. The Vikings would serve much better by trading down and picking up some extra picks to help upgrade their team.

Washington Redskins

This one is probably the biggest surprise of the teams I’ve listed, but the Redskins need a lot of help on defense. If they don’t sign Brian Orakpo back, they will have even more needs. They are a pick down because of the Robert Griffin III trade and could really use more picks. If someone likes one of the quarterbacks who falls into the top of the second-round or just falls in love with another player in this incredibly deep class tickles someone’s fancy then the Redskins could trade down and pick up a few more picks to help their team.
