2014 NFL Draft: Winners from Day Two

We all knew this was one of the deepest drafts in NFL history, but the way things played out yesterday had us turning the volume up on that notion from a four to a max volume 10.

Teams that were able to wheel-and-deal, picking up extra picks, have to be considered the biggest winners, in the fact they are maximizing their opportunity to grab quality players, even again today (rounds 4-7).  Lets check out who stole the show yesterday and filled their teams cracks and holes by stealing some of the top talent that was left on the board in day two of the NFL Draft.  Also be sure to continue to check eDraft’s live coverage of the draft continuing with rounds 4-7 today with up to the second coverage.

Oakland Raiders:  Derek Carr, Gabe Jackson

How do you not crown the Raiders day-two champions and call it a night?  This west-coast franchise that is usually the laughing stock of draft weekend shut up the critics on Friday night after they grabbed a new franchise-quarterback in Derek Carr, someone who not only myself but eDraft had very highly ranked all throughout the process.

Then they followed that up with grabbing what many would argue the best guard in all the land with Mississippi State’s Gabe Jackson.  Jackson is a monster who mauls people from the inside, opening up huge running lanes while protecting the passer.

Oakland instantly got tougher in the trenches and is a team that will be more physical at the line of scrimmage, but more imprtanly shored up the most valuable position in sports, the quarterback.  Combine these two picks with first-rounder Khalil Mack, and nobody has improved their team more than the Oakland Raiders.

San Francisco 49ers:  Carlos Hyde, Marcus Martin, Chris Borland, Brandon Thomas

What a team like San Francisco did Friday night, after appearing in three-straight NFC championship games, well, it wasn’t even fair.  The team went into the day already nabbing Bills receiver Stevie Johnson for a future fourth-round pick, healing their wide out needs for the time being.  From their you could argue they grabbed the best running back and center in the draft, two needs that were obvious inside the organization.

Then, yes theres more, they added depth at the inside linebacker position while Navaro Bowman attempts to come back from a nasty torn ACL injury.  Chris Borland fell because of his size, but is one of the best at what he does with a non-stop motor, and also has some of the best instincts for his position to play the game.  Getting to work with Harbaugh is going to be a huge advantage for Borland and his long term career.

If you needed a cherry on top there is Brandon Thomas.  Thomas shined in the Senior Bowl and was being looked at hard as a first-round option, until he tore his ACL during a private workout.

This team scooped him up with the last pick of the day and will stash him away much like a red-shirt year from a college player.  If he can come back remotely close to what he was playing like before the injury, the Niners got another steal, and a player that will contribute as a starter on the line someday.

Houston Texans:  Xavier Sua-Filo, C.J. Fiedorowicz, Louis NIx

If Gabe Jackson was your top guard, odds are Sua-Filo was second on your list.  You could make a case for both for how good they are, but theres no doubt the who the Texans chose will have an immediate impact on the offensive line.  Sua-Filo is an extremely athletic man in space and will give the Texans running game a huge boost.  Meanwhile, Fiedorowicz gives the team a legitimate weapon at the tight-end position for the first time in years.  He is a mammoth of a man at nearly 6’7” and will be an instant upgrade in the red-zone department for whoever is under center.  Between Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins, these three make a solid nucleus on the offensive side of the ball.

Last but not least, my favorite pick for the Texans in defensive tackle from Notre Dame Louis Nix.  I had a first-round grade on Nix because of his rare ability to not only plug the hole and chew up blockers, but to create interior pressure from the 1-technique position as well.  To have a player at the nose tackle position be able to give you the best of both worlds in the run and pass game is a truly special thing in todays NFL.  Just the thought of the Texans front 3-4 defensive looking like J.J. Watt, Louis Nix, and Jadeveon Clowney is something that will give quarterbacks in the AFC South nightmares for years.
