2014 San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft, Free Agency Edition

Here we are again. I promised that these mock drafts would be a thing of the past. However, that's simply not going to be the case moving forward. As we should have realized, free agency changes the landscape of team needs.

The San Francisco 49ers are a prime example of this. Outside of acquiring two under-performing former top-round picks in trades and signing two veteran defensive backs, the 49ers haven't necessarily done a whole lot in free agency.

There are a couple good reasons. Flush with picks in the upcoming draft, the 49ers have an opportunity to get deeper and more talented while saving some cash. In addition, they have less than $6 million in cap room at this point.

In any event, here is our last 49ers mock draft of the season. We will be conducting similar mocks for 31 teams around the NFL between now and may.

For the purposes of these articles and for full disclosure, we will use Fanspeak's mock draft game for these mocks.

First Round: Bradley Roby, Cornerback, Ohio State

San Francisco's inability to even seriously entertain the idea of bringing in a veteran worth a darn indicates that its more than sold on Tramaine Brock and Chris Culliver as starters on the outside. The 49ers also retained Eric Wright prior to the start of free agency and signed former Minnesota Vikings second-round bust Chris Cook to a league-minimum deal.

Needless to say, the pickings are slim outside of Brock and Culliver. Roby had a down 2013 campaign mainly due to injury, but was at one point considered a top-10 lock. He has prototypical NFL size for a cornerback at 6'0" and nearly 200 pounds. In addition to that, Roby fits San Francisco's defensive scheme. He's much better in press/man coverage than he is in zone coverage.

Second Round: Jimmie Ward, Safety, Northern Illinois

Unfortunately here, I don't think Ward lasts to the 49ers in the secound round. With that said, we are working off a different premise in this mock than in the past. In watching Ward's tape, it's hard to come to a conclusion that he struggles with any one thing.

At 5'11", I guess it could be said that Ward is smallish for a strong safety in the NFL, but it's important to note that former 49ers safety Donte Whitner is the exact same height. In drawing comparisons to Whitner, it appears that Ward is much more fluid and takes better angles in coverage. As any 49ers fan knows, Whitner made some big mistakes in that aspect of the game late in the 2013 season. He's a first-round talent that lasts to the second round due to circumstances in this specific mock. Ward is also a perfect eventual replacement for recent free-agent acquisition Antoine Bethea

Second Round: Donte Moncrief, Wide Receiver, Mississippi

San Francisco has been actively seeking veteran free-agent receivers, but have yet to come away with any. There is a strong chance that Trent Baalke and Co. sign one before the draft, but I'd hedge my bets towards the 49ers waiting to see how the draft plays out.

With Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Quinton Patton as the top-three pass catchers on the outside, there isn't necessarily a need to reach for a receiver in what is one of the deepest classes in recent NFL history.

Moncrief flies under the radar a great deal, but has everything you look for in a starter-caliber receiver at the next level. He's more of a possession receiver, which would indicate that he'd be an eventual replacement for Boldin. While Moncrief does tend to struggle with body control in route running, he'd be a great red-zone target for Colin Kaepernick in the passing game.

Third Round: Dominique Easley, Defensive Tackle, Florida

Easley is the exact type of player San Francisco targets in the mid rounds. He's coming off two torn ACL's in college, he's a major injury risk. If we just looked at talent, this Florida product would be a top-20 pick. Kinda reminds us of the 49ers selection of Tank Carradine last year, but I digress.

He's a perfect fit to sit and learn in a rotation behind Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and Carradine for the next year or two. Easley takes up double teams, closes off the edge and opens up gaps for oncoming pass rushers. That's the exactly type of role San Francisco looks for in its 3-4 defensive front.

Third Round: Billy Turner, Offensive Tackle, North Dakota State

Despite trading for Jonathan Martin earlier in March, San Francisco will still need to add an offensive linemen or two in the upcoming draft. Turner is a small-school product with some issues as it relates to technique and getting too high at the point of contact. The talent and athleticism is, however, there. Potentially a replacement for one of San Francisco's book ends down the road.

Third Round: Loucheiz Purifoy, Cornerback, Florida

If San Francisco's defensive coaching staff can coach Purifoy up, it will have a mighty fine mid-round steal. He struggles with effort, instincts and recognition on the field. Three things that can be fixed with the right coaching. Where Purifoy has slipped a great deal in the minds of scouts after struggling in 2013, he's a first-round talent. The Florida product could be brought along slowly, especially if he's the second corner San Francisco selects in May.

Fourth Round: Bryan Stork, Center, Florida State

Daniel Kilgore will likely take over for Jonathan Goodwin as the 49ers starting center in 2014. This doesn't mean that Baalke and Co. will ignore the center position when the draft comes along. Why not provide competition for Kilgore in the form of the best center in the nation last year? If Stork beats Kilgore out, the 49ers will have both a mighty fine young center and a solid young interior line backup.

Fifth Round: David Fales, Quarterback, San Jose State

Seventh Round: Andrew Jackson, Linebacker, Western Kentucky

Seventh Round: Colt Lyerla, Tight End, Oregon

Seventh Round: Kain Colter, Wide Receiver, Northwestern

Next Up: Seattle Seahawks
