In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the Buffalo Bills as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for Buffalo while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.
1. Strong-side Linebacker
The ideal scenario here would be for Buffalo to land a Darron Lee in the first round and keep up-and-coming linebacker Preston Brown on the inside. Though, an argument could be made that Reggie Ragland would be a good pick if Lee is off the board. That would enable Brown to move to the strong side.
As it is, this is definitely a need for Buffalo. Manny Lawson isn't getting any younger, and the Bills have no one of substance behind him on the depth chart. In a defense that's seemingly solid at all tiers, the two outside linebacker positions are surely weaknesses.
2. Wide Receiver
In terms of talent Sammy Watkins is one of the top-10 receivers in the NFL. And while injury issues should be a concern, there's little reason to believe he's not a No. 1 receiver on a good passing offense. Outside of that, there are issues here in Buffalo. Robert Woods is nothing more than a substandard No. 2 in the NFL. He recorded just 47 receptions for 552 yards last season. Meanwhile, Buffalo lost Chris Hogan to the New England Patriots in free agency.
Something needs to get done here if the Bills are going to give Tyrod Taylor every opportunity to succeed in his second season as the team's starting quarterback.
3. Weak-side Linebacker
If the strong side is Buffalo's biggest need, the weak side comes in a close second. Does anyone really think Tony Steward is a replacement level starter? If not, is there anyone behind him to take over on the depth chart? The answers to these two questions have to be a resounding no. Depending on how Buffalo views Lawson and Steward moving forward, this could actually be the biggest need.
4. Defensive End
Releasing Mario Williams made perfect sense. He didn't contribute up to his pay grade last season and wasn't a fit in Rex Ryan's defense. However, his departure does leave somewhat of a hole here. Jerry Hughes is slated to start at one defensive end position. On the other side, it's a combination of lackluster performers without much previous success.
We are talking about Lavar Edwards, IK Enemkpali, Jerel Worthy, Max Valles and Cedric Reed. These three players combined for a grand total of zero sacks last season. Yeah, that's not going to get it done.
5. Guard
More than anything, this is about finding a potential upgrade over John Miller or Cyril Richardson at right guard. Outside of that, the Bills offensive line is as solid as it gets. In fact, it is going to be returning five starters from a season ago. Though, if the team is able to find value at guard, it could stand to find an upgrade over Miller, especially if the team isn't sold on Richardson competing in camp.
