The Dallas Cowboys are coming off an injury-plagued 2015 season that saw their two best players, Tony Romo and Dez Bryant, miss a combined 19 games. When healthy, the Cowboys should be considered legit conference title contenders.
There are, however, a tremendous amount of holes to fill on this roster. From running back and wide receiver on offense to the pass-rush position and safety on defense, Jerry Jones and Co. need to get to work to rebuild certain areas of the field.
In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the Dallas Cowboys as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for Dallas while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.
1. Pass rusher
With Greg Hardy unlikely to return and Randy Gregory facing a four-game suspension, Dallas is incredibly thin from a pass-rush standpoint. Add in the fact that Jeremy Mincey and Jack Crawford are slated to become free agents, and this is a real need for the team. After all, defensive ends not among this group of four players recorded a combined eight sacks last season.
Needless to say, Dallas will be looking to fill the void early. Ohio State's Joey Bosa and former Oregon standout DeForest Buckner are options at four.
2. Safety
The safety tandem of J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church leaves a whole heck of a lot to be desired from a coverage standpoint. And short of the team moving Byron Jones to safety, a highly unlikely scenario, Dallas simply needs to find an upgrade here. The first look should be moving Wilcox to free safety, which would relegate Church to bench duties. Unfortunately, short of adding a Jalen Ramsey at No. 4, there isn't a truly elite cover safety in the draft. This is an indication Dallas will have to look to catch lightning in a bottle later in the draft.
3. Quarterback
Tony Romo isn't getting any younger and is coming off an injury-plagued 2015 season that saw him miss all but four games with multiple collarbone injuries. Romo is also expected to miss the next six-to-eight weeks after undergoing surgery on said collarbone. While the Pro Bowler is likely going to find himself under center for Dallas over the next few seasons, the Cowboys need to prepare for his eventual retirement. More than that, they need a viable backup after what we saw from Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden, among others, last season
4. Running Back
Is Dallas really going to rely on Darren McFadden remaining relatively healthy for a second consecutive season? That's something we haven't seen throughout his up-and-down career. Outside of McFadden, there are even more question marks here. Joseph Randle was released during the 2015 season after more run-ins with the law. Meanwhile, Lance Dunbar is returning from a serious injury. Without much cap room to work with, Dallas would be best suited looking for a long-term replacement in the draft.
5. Wide Receiver
Sure Dez Bryant is one of the most physically-imposing receivers in the NFL. He's also coming off an injury-plagued 2015 season that saw him miss seven games. Outside of Bryant, who should be healthy this upcoming season, there isn't a whole heck of a lot to look at here. Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Devin Street all failed to step up in expanded playing time. Simply put, the Cowboys have a bunch of No. 3's and No. 4's on the roster behind Bryant. That needs to change in short order.
