The New Orleans Saints put up a disappointing seven-win 2015 campaign that was marred by an historically bad defense.
Overall, the Saints yielded an average of 30 points and 413 total yards per game, both numbers ranking in the bottom two of the NFL.
In continuing with this 32 article series, here's a look at the top needs for the New Orleans Saints as well as a seven-round mock draft we ran through the FanSpeak mock draft simulator. We manually picked for New Orleans while the picks for all other 31 teams were selected by the simulator.
1. Cornerback
With Brandon Browner nothing more than a failed experiment after his release, the Saints are going to be in need for a corner come draft time. Keenan Lewis is a darn good cover guy on one side, but there's not much more behind that. Can P.J. Williams step into a starting role? If not, is Delvin Breaux prepared to take on a larger role? We can't be too sure of that. Selecting 12th, New Orleans might be out of luck when it comes to one of the top two corners, but this doesn't mean the team can't add a talented body later in the draft.
2. Defensive End
Cameron Jordan is among the best defensive ends in the game. It's on the other side that New Orleans should be concerned. Bobby Richardson is currently slated to be the starter. He recorded 0.5 sacks in 11 starts last season. Ouch! Unlike corner, the Saints might be able to find a top-end EDGE guy with the 12th pick. The likes of Shaq Lawson and Noah Spence might be available.
3. Weak-side Linebacker
The addition of James Laurinaitis might enable the Saints to move promising youngster Stephone Anthony to the weak side. Though, we don't even know if Laurinaitis is a three-down player at this stage of his career. Even if he is, that's not going to last much longer. In this, the Saints would be best suited adding a weak-side guy while keeping Anthony at a position he excelled playing last season.
4. Guard
Heck, we might be able to draw the conclusion that New Orleans needs two guards. Is this team really prepared to go into the 2016 season with Tim Lelito and Mike McGlynn as starters? Fans in New Orleans best hope note. With a pretty solid group of mid-tier guard prospects, the Saints could very well add a potential first-year starter late in Day 2 or early in Day 3.
5. Wide Receiver
Following the release of Marques Colston, the Saints are going to be in the market for another receiver behind a talented duo that includes Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead. And while there is some hope for Brandon Coleman, he might be best suited for a No. 4 role. New Orleans might wait to address this position until the mid rounds, but if a top-end receiver is there at 12, don't be surprised if the Saints go in that direction.
