2016 Oakland Raiders Training Camp Preview

The Oakland Raiders will open Training Camp later this month with high expectations to build off a solid 2015 campaign. Both offensively and defensively, the Raiders have the foundation set as they continue to build and add pieces to the puzzle.

Now, normally the Raiders training camp welcomes several cases of intense competition as some positions aren’t solidified, this year however, the majority of roles are assigned, and the team can work together knowing their role going in as they prepare for the 2016 season.

Chemistry is built during training camp, and after the way this team played together under head coach Jack Del Rio, the chemistry was evident amongst teammates and coaches alike. They had fun on the field and fed off each other's success.

Due to the chemistry, and the fact the Raiders seem to be on the rise, they were able to bring in some of the NFL’s top free agents this offseason in Sean Smith and Bruce Irvin. Two defensive stars who will thrive in silver and black while also addressing two needs for this team moving forward.

While the competition amongst positions may be scarce, every one has to earn their spot on the roster, and due to the draft there will be some interesting players to keep an eye out for. Here’s a look at some of the more intriguing position battles.

First of all, the quarterback position is in no way, shape, or form, a threat. Derek Carr has the starting gig, however, the addition of Connor Cook is an interesting one when it comes to Matt McGloin
McGloin has been a solid backup for Raiders quarterbacks, and the fact that Reggie McKenzie took a QB in the fourth round was a tad surprising.

In three seasons with the Raiders, McGloin has gone 153-262, a completion percentage of 58.4. He has also thrown for 1,818 yards with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. McGloin took snaps with the third team during OTA’s while Cook was given the second team snaps. Now, McGloin has had to earn respect and the position as Carr’s backup, so this is nothing new to him.

Cook fell in the draft, which will give him an extra drive and motivation as camp approaches.

Either way, the Raiders offense will be in good hands if Carr were to go down. It is also a bonus that the supporting cast is full of playmakers such as Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, and Latavius Murray. Not to mention an offensive line that may be the best in the league.

All eyes will be on first round draft pick Karl Joseph who will look to immediately have an impact on a Raiders secondary in desperate need of improvement. Oakland addressed these issues in the offseason via the draft and free agency, so it will be interesting to see the newcomers impact and how the rookie’s first year goes in the NFL.

Several questions surround DJ Hayden as camp approaches. Many raider fans are fed up with his lack of production on the field, but the coaching staff isn’t giving up on him just yet. With the addition of Smith and Reggie Nelson the secondary has improved, but depth is still of much value and TJ Carrie will battle it out with Hayden for the nickel spot. Carrie has been decent in his years with the Raiders, but his spot in the roster is in no way safe.

The Raiders also have some decisions to make when it comes to the tight end position. They were looking to potentially deal Mychal Rivera this offseason, but he enters camp with the silver and black looking for a little redemption with time to prove his worth. He is a solid offensive target for Carr, however his blocking ability is where he lacks. Clive Walford was a big hit last season, and the Raiders will rely on his continued success and development as the season approaches.

For a first time in a while, the Raiders serious position battles are few and far between, and those fighting for a spot could find their way out due to a higher level of talent, which is the ideal problem to have for Jack del Rio to have as he enters camp.

One of the main selling points for the silver and black has been the team chemistry. It was evident last year, and all offseason as newcomers attempted to recruit other free agents, and team bonding via twitter or hanging out at a Golden State Warriors playoff game as a group. They get along, they have fun, and that all translates to the field.

Now this is a tough division with the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos, but this 53-man roster is going to be stacked with talent.

Training Camp and preseason will be our first opportunity to see how they have vibed with each other and just how much potential the Raiders will have not only this season, but in the near future.
