5 Most Disappointing Fantasy Football Quarterbacks of 2014

1. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers

Statistics: 3,165 passing yards, 576 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions (228.20 points)

Kaepernick, who has not thrown more than one touchdown in a game since Week 6, has been a major fantasy football disappointment this season. He heads into Week 17 as the 17th-ranked fantasy quarterback, which means that the struggling signal caller is nothing more than a mid-tier QB2 option in standard leagues. This comes on the heels of Kaepernick finishing last season as the ninth-ranked quarterback and with expectations that his fantasy performance would increase with a surplus of weapons on offense.

But much like pretty much every 49ers player on that side of the ball, Kaepernick just didn't live up to expectations in what was a down season for San Francisco. The interesting dynamic here is that San Francisco held Kaepernick back from running prior to last week's game against the San Diego Chargers, a game that saw him score his first rushing touchdown of the season. We will have a lot more on Kaepernick and what his dynasty forecast is expected to be during the offseason.

2. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

Statistics: 3,013 passing yards, 488 rushing yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions (229.32 points)

Some could argue that Newton has been more disappointing than Kaepernick from a fantasy perspective. Entering the season, Newton was considered one of the top-five fantasy quarterbacks based on his preseason ADP (average draft position). He was also coming off a 2013 campaign that saw him finish behind only Peyton Manning and Drew Brees in fantasy points from the quarterback position.

Through 16 weeks, Newton ranks 16th among quarterbacks in fantasy points. He's put up one touchdown or less in over half of his starts and has turned the ball over 17 times in 13 games. That's not necessarily the production you look for in a top pick at the quarterback position.

3. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

Statistics: 3,008 passing yards, 136 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions (195.72 points)

Unlike Kaepernick and Newton, Dalton's fantasy struggles can be summed up by poor play on his part. While the other two have certainly had their struggles, Dalton has been downright atrocious all season. As a low-end QB2 option (19th overall), Dalton has put up five fantasy points or less three times this season. Heck, he even tallied a negative fantasy performance earlier in the season against the Cleveland Browns. Overall, Dalton has put up more interceptions than touchdowns five times, tallied one touchdown or less nine times and less than 200 passing yards five times.

Dalton entered the season with unreasonable expectations after finishing last season as the fifth-ranked fantasy quarterback. And while his 2014 performance can't see seen as a sign of things to come, he can't be counted on as anything more than a bottom-tier QB1 moving forward.

4. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

Statistics: 3,406 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions (248.34 points)

Romo is a legitimate MVP candidate. His performance this season has been nothing short of amazing. But the reality of the situation is that he hasn't performed up to expectations as it relates to fantasy football. And to be honest, it's mostly due to DeMarco Murray's performance at running back.

Romo, who was the 10th-ranked fantasy quarterback last season, has put up top-tier QB2 numbers this year. In fact, his last two seasons have been Romo's two-worst from a fantasy standpoint. From 2008-2012, he finished as a top-six fantasy quarterback each season that he played a full slate of games. It appears this will not longer be the case.

5. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

Statistics: 4,040 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions (230 points)

I personally didn't have high expectations for Stafford heading into the season. The primary reason for this was the fact that he let me down a lot in previous seasons. But with the addition of Golden Tate, some suggested that Stafford would once again be an elite fantasy option. After all, he did finish last season as the seventh-best fantasy quarterback.

It's been a completely different story in 2014. Stafford currently ranks 15th among quarterbacks in fantasy points and has put up seven below average fantasy performances in 16 weeks. He's also tallied less than 11 points five times. With all the weapons that Detroit boasts on offense, this isn't acceptable.
