Training camp is just around the corner and the countdown to the return of football has begun. A new season means a fresh slate for every team, and some have an opportunity to surprise this year.
Here’s a look at five teams that just may surprise you this season.
5. Kansas City Chiefs
After having the worst season in the NFL last year, it was time for some change in Kansas City. They let go of quarterback Matt Cassel and acquired Alex Smith via trade with the San Francisco 49ers in hopes that he can steer the team in the right direction. They also brought in a new head coach, Andy Reid; whose resume speaks for itself.
Last year the Chiefs lacked depth and leadership in the quarterback position. Now, Cassel had some nice years in Kansas City, but has since declined. They are a talented team, how else do you explain the fact that they had six pro bowlers despite posting a 2-14 record? Bottom line is the coaching was terrible, but they’ve fixed the problem.
They’ve added some depth to their roster which can help them become an improved team this year.
4. Miami Dolphins
Last year the Dolphins finished the season in second place with a 7-9 record, but look to be an improved team in 2013 and could finally get above the .500 mark.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill will have some more offensive targets to utilize this year, most importantly wide receiver Mike Wallace. The Dolphins passing game could significantly improve in 2013.
While they did lose Jake Long to free agency, it shouldn’t be too big of a loss as he’s struggled with injuries.
Don’t expect them to beat out the Patriots for the AFC East title, but expect to see a better team with the potential to contend and get passed the .500 mark.
3. Carolina Panthers
The last two seasons, the Panthers have finished the year on a high note with a little win streak only to start the following season on a losing note. This season could be different.
They have quarterback Cam Newton and while they are in the tough NFC South, they have a talented team. They didn’t make many moves this offseason because they’re building and developing their young players through the draft. This year they selected Star Lotulelei who will help improve the defensive line.
Last year they finished 7-9, but this year could potentially improve that record and get above .500.
2. Tennessee Titans
The Titans were one of the worst teams last year, but managed to post a 6-10 record. Their defense was and still is their biggest concern, however the offense has improved.
They’ve added some protection for running back Chris Johnson which will help him have an impressive season. The improved offense will also give quarterback Jake Locker some weapons as well as some protection.
The Titans play in the very difficult AFC South and have to go against the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts, but they can improve their play and have a much better season this year.
1. Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys finished 2012 with an 8-8 record and had a chance at a division title, but lost the last game of the season against the Washington Redskins securing their NFC East title.
Quarterback Tony Romo struggles in the big games, but with some added help, that could potentially change this season. Dez Bryant and Jason Witten are Romo’s biggest weapons on offense and could put up even better numbers in 2013.
The defense suffered a lot of injuries last year which affected their record. With a healthy team, the Cowboys have a chance to win the division this year, but they’ll need contributions from everyone and Romo will have to show he can actually win the big games.
