It didn't take Antonio Gates too long to make a major impact in his return from a four-game suspension he had to serve to start the season after testing positive for a PED.
The San Diego Chargers tight end put up nine receptions for 92 yards with two touchdowns on 11 targets in a close loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. Amazingly enough, that performance placed Gates as the top fantasy tight end for the week — ahead of the likes of Tyler Eifert and Rob Gronkowski.
In fact, Gates put up his best single-game performance since Week 4 of the 2010 season.
This could be good news for the 2-3 Chargers heading into Week 6. With Keenan Allen playing at a high level at wide receiver, Gates could open up San Diego's passing offense even more moving forward.
From a fantasy perspective, Gates' 2015 debut couldn't have gone better. With only three consistently great fantasy tight ends — Rob Gronkowski, Tyler Eifert and Travis Kelce — Gates can fill a major vacuum here. He's going to be a must play in DFS contests, especially against AFC West defenses moving forward.
More than that, those of you who actually rostered Gates in year-long leagues now likely have a FLEX option to go with a strong TE1. That could be huge moving forward.
