Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith to Retire Following 2015 Season

One of the most productive receivers the NFL has seen over the past decade-plus, Baltimore Ravens pass-catcher Steve Smith is still going strong after 14 seasons in the league. After suiting up for the Carolina Panthers for his first 13 years, Smith joined the Baltimore Ravens this past season. Showing skeptics that father time has not caught up with him, the now 36-year-old Smith put up over 1,000 yards and six scores for Baltimore last season.

While some figured Smith would play until his 50th birthday, the veteran receiver has decided that 2015 will be his last season in the NFL:

"I feel like it's time, Smith said Monday. "All the chips are on the table. Let's see what the dealer gives me."

Smith still thinks he has what it takes to play beyond the 2015 season, but he doesn't want to just hold on to a career that has seen his among the most consistent pass catchers since joining the NFL as a third-round pick of the Panthers back in 2001. Smith, 39, is 18th on the all-time receptions list. He's put up eight 1,000-yard seasons and is coming off a stellar first year in Baltimore.

Barring an unfortunate turn in 2015, Smith will go out still at the top of his game and with his health intact. That's a rarity in today's NFL.
