I’ve never really struggled with an article more than this one, picking a single team as the best fit for the top five quarterbacks in the NFL draft. Recently the 2014 class of quarterbacks has taken a hit with Marcus Mariota staying at Oregon, Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger both tearing their ACL’s. Mariota was likely a top three quarterback and possibly a top ten pick depending on who you ask. Murray and Mettenberger are both up and down boards, Mettenberger typically being ranked higher. At this point they’ll probably drop some because of their knee injuries, and drafting either of them is basically an investment in the 2015 season as these knee injuries can take about a year to recover from. With all that said, here are my best fits for the top five quarterbacks.
Teddy Bridgewater, Jacksonville Jaguars:
Jacksonville has suffered from poor quarterback play for far too long. Enter Bridgewater who would immediately upgrade the position by a significant amount. Jedd Fisch is the offensive coordinator for the Jaguars and he needs a quarterback to open up this offense.
Fisch was previously the offensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes where he had one of the better offenses in college football. While there, his offense called for a lot of vertical passing and Bridgewater can make all the throws required. Jacksonville has parts needed for a good offense in receivers Cecil Shorts, Justin Blackmon (depending on how his suspension goes), Maurice Jones-Drew, and the left-tackle of the future in Luke Joeckel. The Jaguars just need the quarterback to elevate the players there and Bridgewater can do that.
Derek Carr, Cleveland Browns:

The Browns are another team that’s suffered for years, and continue to suffer from poor quarterback play. Carr enters an offense that has a deep threat in Josh Gordon, a great tight end in Jordan Cameron, and one of the best left-tackles in the NFL.
Now Derek isn’t his brother, and comparing the two isn’t needed. Carr has the athleticism that Rob Chudzinski previously had in Carolina with Cam Newton and he can make all the throws from the pocket as needed.
Chudzinski doesn’t require the most athletic quarterbacks for his offense, as quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Derek Anderson have had success his offense. Carr will be everything Cleveland fans have waited for and Chudzinski will maximize his ability.
Blake Bortles, Arizona Cardinals:
Bortles could benefit from a season on the bench to learn and adjust to the NFL, so a team with an entrenched starter, albeit not a great starter, is a good idea.
Bortles is a big athletic quarterback, he can make plays with his legs and let the ball rip all around the field.
Bruce Arians spent last season as the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts where he had another big athletic quarterback, Andrew Luck.
Now Bortles isn’t nearly the passer that Luck is, but he could create similar results.Bortles would step into a situation that gives him a great defense, three great offensive weapons in Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Ellington, and Michael Floyd.
This not only would make sense for Bortles, but also the Cardinals, as Carson Palmer is due to have a cap figure of twelve million in 2015. Selecting Bortles and letting him spend a year on the bench could save the Cardinals millions and get them their quarterback of the future.
Johnny Manziel, Houston Texans:
Only an hour and a half from College Station, Johnny Football would be welcomed with open arms to the fan base. Placing Manziel was the most difficult out of the quarterbacks for me, as I honestly don’t know what to think of him. I’ve watched his college games, and he can make some of the most ridiculous plays, both good and bad. Houston needs a quarterback, right now the jury is still out on Case Keenum.
Manziel wouldn’t find a better place to succeed in the NFL as he’d inherit an all-pro running back, one of the better offensive lines in football, DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson. The defense would always be there to bail him out, which is something he hasn’t had at Texas A&M. I don’t necessarily think that Manziel will go that high in the draft, but if Houston thinks he’s their guy then he should. Manziel gets to stay at home in Texas and continue his football career at the highest level.
Zach Mettenberger, St. Louis Rams:
Now this might seem like an odd fit, as Mettenberger did just tear his ACL, the same injury that Sam Bradford just suffered from. It’s time for St. Louis to move on from Bradford and without any of the regime that drafted him still there, he’ll have a hard time finding supporters.
Mettenberger would again like many of these quarterbacks, walk into a situation that has a good offensive-line, and defense, which are tops on a young quarterbacks list for needs. Young quarterbacks make mistakes, that’s why a good offensive-line and defense are needed, the line to limit the mistakes, and the defense to bail them out. Not only would Mettenberger have those, he’d also have an incredibly dangerous weapon in Tavon Austin. The Rams need a good quarterback, and Mettenberger can be that guy for them.
