This past week has been rather busy for NFL teams. There have been quite a few big trades, and with free agency starting, the rumors have been running wild. When it comes to AFC West teams, there have been a few rumors, mostly revolving around the Raiders and Chiefs. Here’s a look at the biggest rumors heading into free agency.
The Oakland Raiders have nearly $70 million to spend this offseason, and so far have had no ties to some of the top free agents. They were expected to flash the cash and bring in some top offensive playmakers to help Derek Carr run a more successful offense and passing game, but that hasn’t been the case.
Ndamukong Suh was going to visit with the Raiders this week, but those plans soon changed as he is now signing with the Miami Dolphins. Suh was one of the biggest names on the free agent market this offseason, and a top target for the Raiders. Not only did they miss out on Suh, but Randall Cobb and Jeremy Maclin as well as Cobb will return to Green Bay, and Maclin is expected to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.
There’s been a lot of criticism of the Raiders front office thus far due to their lack of urgency and interest in these free agents, but while missing out on players such as these, there are still options for the silver and black. Last offseason they had a lot of money to spend, but didn’t use it to their absolute advantage and the majority of their free agent signings didn’t pan out.
Now, the Raiders are linked to former Chiefs center Rodney Hudson as the two sides have reportedly agreed to a five-year $44.5 million deal. Hudson would be a solid pickup for the Raiders and this improving offensive line.
With the loss of Hudson, the Chiefs will look to improve their O-line, most likely via draft. The Chiefs have also been in the market for a big-play wide receiver in an effort to fix their offensive woes from last season. Playmaker Jeremy Maclin is reportedly heading to KC to reunite with Andy Reid and fix the Chiefs issues at wide receiver. Maclin will make a reported $11 million per year with his new deal.
Offensive guard Orlando Franklin is expected to sign a five-year deal with the San Diego Chargers worth close to $36 million and $20 million in guaranteed money. The Bolts have also reached an agreement to keep cornerback Brandon Flowers for four more years.
There aren’t many rumors surrounding the Broncos and free agent signings, but they are losing some of their bigger names as Franklin heads to San Diego, and Julius Thomas is in talks with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Free agent rumors are just that until the contracts are signed, but it looks as if the top playmakers available this free agency have agreed to terms with their new teams. In the AFC West, the Raiders have the most money to spend, and are in need of the most help, but the offseason is still young.
