After losing Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu in free agency, the Cincinnati Bengals had to find some talent and depth at the wide receiver position during the offseason.
The two combined for 98 receptions and over 1,200 yards a season ago. Those are nearly identical numbers to what A.J. Green put up as the team's top pass catcher.
Needless to say, Andy Dalton couldn't go into the 2016 campaign without some reinforcements here.
The team signed recently-released former New England Patriots receiver Brandon LaFell in April to give Green some veteran help at receiver.
A year after putting up 73 receptions for 953 yards and seven touchdowns for the New England Patriots in 2014, the 29-year-old LaFell struggled with injuries and production this past season, tallying 37 receptions for 515 yards in 11 games.
Despite this, it appears that the Bengals are set with him being the starter opposite Green.
The interesting dynamic here is that Cincinnati appears to be willing to give LaFell the benefit of the doubt over rookie second-round pick Tyler Boyd.
Boyd, a three-year starter for Pitt, is among the most pro-ready receivers of the 2016 NFL Draft class. He recorded 78-plus receptions in all three seasons with the Panthers, putting up 1,100-plus yards in both 2013 and 2014. All said, Boyd tallied 120-plus targets in each of his three college seasons.
From a fantasy perspective, there's not a lot to look at here. Sure we might take a shot on LaFell in deeper leagues. We will also check him out on the waiver wire early in the season should he start to look like the player he was in New England in 2014. Though, he's not necessarily too relevant, even as Cincinnati's starter opposite Green.
As it relates to Boyd, the projection has always been that he'd be nothing more than a decent add in dynasty drafts. If he's the third receiver on the Bengals, that assumption is only magnified further.
