Browns Name Johnny Manziel Starter for the Remainder of the Season

At 2-8 on the year and losers of five consecutive games, the remainder of the Cleveland Browns season will be all about draft positioning and getting young players some more on-field action.

In this, head coach Mike Pettine announced on Tuesday that Johnny Manziel will take over for Josh McCown as the team's starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.

This really shouldn't be much of a surprise.

A first-round pick of the Browns last year, Manziel is the only quarterback currently on the roster that may figure into the team's long-term plans.

Despite throwing 11 touchdowns compared to four interceptions on the year, the 36-year-old McCown was never anything more than a placeholder for Manziel under center. With the season pretty much over from a contention standpoint, moving on from McCown made the most sense.

Manziel, 22, is coming off a career-best performance in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. He completed 33-of-45 passes for 372 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Overall this season, the much-maligned former Texas A&M star is completing 60 percent of his passes for 933 yards with five touchdowns and two picks. He's added 90 yards on 17 rush attempts.

This is an opportunity for Manziel to prove himself to the Browns' brass for the final six games of the season. With what will likely be a top-10 pick come draft time, Cleveland needs to know if it has its quarterback of the future already on the roster.
