Browns Preparing to Start Johnny Manziel This Week

The Cleveland Browns are just one week into the regular season, and it already appears that they are going to be forced to make a change at quarterback. Less than a half into the team's season opener against the New York Jets on Sunday, starter Josh McCown went down with a concussion.

Second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel replaced McCown in the lineup, completing 13-of-24 passes for 182 yards with a touchdown, an interceptions and two lost fumbles. Manziel also added 35 yards on five rush attempts.

Out of necessity more than anything else, it appears the Browns are planning to start Manziel this week against the Tennessee Titans. When posed with a question regarding the team's plans, Browns head coach Mike Pettine had this to say:

"That’s accurate to say,” Pettine said. “If we have our starting quarterback in protocol … it’s an ideal situation that Josh (McCown) would be back at the end of the week, but we have to plan otherwise that he won’t be available at least early for practice."

If McCown doesn't pass the concussion protocol, Manziel will start team's season opener. According to Pettine, he will be given first-team reps this week.

From a fantasy perspective, Manziel offers much more upside than his veteran counterpart. Though, his value is solely limited to DFS contests.

We will update this story as more information becomes available regarding McCown's status.
