The Dallas Cowboys will have Ezekiel Elliott on the field for its Week 1 game against the New York Giants. Despite the NFL upholding the six-game suspension it handed to the second-year back, the league decided it made sense for him to play the opening week while the appeals process plays out in court.
From a fantasy perspective, this means that Elliott remains a top-end RB1 play. He recorded 158 yards and two touchdowns in two games against the Giants last season.
The interesting dynamic here is that nothing really changes from a redraft perspective. Elliott was pushed down in terms of preseason ADP to No. 8 among running backs. Considering he still might miss six games to suspension, that makes sense. Though, with the Texas court hearing the NFLPA motion for a temporary restraining order to override the suspension, there's hope Elliott will play the entire 16-game 2017 season. If so, that obviously changes his fantasy value. A ruling on that is expected before close of business on Friday.
From a DFS perspective, Elliott does have a somewhat difficult matchup against a Giants defense that yielded the sixth-fewest points to running backs last season. He's likely below both Le'Veon Bell and David Johnson on the totem pole here. He's also the fourth most-expensive RB in FanDuel contests and fifth in DraftKings. Needless to say, Elliott's value is still there. He just doesn't have as great matchup.
We'll definitely have more on this situation as the Elliott case is somewhat settled in court by the end of the business week. But for now, know he's a reliable DFS option in Week 1. In redraft leagues, maybe value him as a top-five fantasy running back at this point. But make sure to stream Darren McFadden in the later rounds just in case Elliott does have to sit six games.
