2016 Review
Crowell was very good for the Browns in 2016, putting up nearly 1,300 total yards with seven touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per touch. This was good enough for him to finish as a top-end RB2 on an otherwise talent-stricken Browns offense.
But much like we've seen from Browns running backs in the past, misuse of Crowell played a major role in what could have otherwise been a fabulous statistical season. He averaged just 12.4 rush attempts per game and touched the ball 20-plus times a grand total of three times over the course of the season.
Some of this had to do with the one-win Browns having to play from behind. Though, it was more due to the fact that Hue Jackson and Co. abandoned the run too often throughout the season. This led to Crowell finishing 19th at his position in fantasy consistency and putting up a third of his fantasy points in just three games. This obviously left Crowell owners out in the cold a majority of the season.
Dynasty Outlook
Really, a lot of this is going to depend on where Crowell ends up. A restricted free agent, it's more than likely he'll somehow remain with the Browns. In and of itself, that will likely depend on what round the Browns decide to tender Crowell. Though, with the team's lack of all-around talent, we can expect an early-to-mid round tender here.
As we covered with Latavius Murray on Monday, what the Browns have to pay Crowell in order to retain him will play a large role in whether he will be considered a three-down back moving forward. The team's questionable quarterback position should play a role here too.
What we do know is that Crowell is more than capable of shouldering the load. He averaged 5.3 yards per touch, 4.8 yards per rush and caught almost 80 percent of the passes thrown in his direction during the 2016 season. These are borderline elite numbers right here.
Free Agency Outlook
As a restricted free agent, Crowell is pretty much at the mercy of the Browns. An undrafted rookie free agent back in 2014, if the Browns were to tender him at his original spot, he could leave without the signing team giving Cleveland any compensation. Though, based on what we saw last season, this seems highly unlikely.
Should Crowell somehow hit the open market, there will surely be some interest in his services. Whenever a running back can average over five yards per touch while providing value in the passing game, he'll be a hot commodity on the open market.
