I had Vincent Brown as one of the most underrated fantasy wide receivers entering the 2012 NFL season. The 2011 third-round pick had a solid rookie season for the San Diego Chargers, compiling 329 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers promised to grow a great deal this season as Brown would have taken on a more important role in the Chargers offense and has a season under his belt in the NFL.
Then came the news that the talented young receiver broke his ankle against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. Various reports indicate that Brown is going to miss at least eight weeks. In an instant, Brown's fantasy value took a dramatic hit and for those of you who have already made selections, it hurts a great deal. For those of us who have drafts planned in the coming weeks, it changes our board a great deal.
Robert Meachem is now a possibility to be picked up later. Brown was holding his Chargers' teammate back a great deal, but the former New Orleans Saints wide receiver is going to get more targets early in the season with Brown out. You also have to take a look at Eddie Royal as a possibility, those two a long with Malcom Floyd are going to be the Chargers top three wide receivers. While none are great WR2 candidates, they will provide some bang for you're proverbial buck.
It is also important to take a look at other under-the-radar options at wide receiver. Michael Crabtree, Brandon Lloyd and Torrey Smith all become stronger second-tier options. While all were probably going to go ahead of Brown in the first place, their importance cannot be understated with the injury to the Chargers wide receiver.
More importantly, it just makes more sense to take a long gander at Meachem and Floyd in San Diego. Their targets and receptions should increase a great deal with Floyd out.
This shouldn't impact you outside of standard leagues. Brown is still a great pickup in dynasty leagues and the like. Moreover, you can now by low on Brown with the expectation that he will be back before the mid point of the season.
