Fantasy Football Prep: 4 Most Overdrafted Quarterbacks

1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (ADP: 28)

Nabbing someone of Manning's ilk early in the draft will set you up nicely at the quarterback position. But that's not exactly what will help you win your league championship. Consider this: Manning—going in the third round—averaged about 3.5 more fantasy points per game than his brother, who can be had in the eighth round. The difference is vast here.

If you were to pick the older Manning in lieu of his younger brother, you would be passing up on the likes of Alfred Morris, Lamar Miller, Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde. In doing so, you'd be giving up any value at running back—a decision that might force you to reach at that position later.

Put it this way.

What tandem sounds better to you? Lamar Miller and Eli Manning or Peyton Manning and Tevin Coleman

2. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks (ADP: 34)

Of the second-tier fantasy quarterbacks, Wilson is probably the best bet. What he will provide you on the ground masks what could be some issues in the passing game, especially with one of the worst offensive lines in football. It's also important to note that 33 percent of Wilson's fantasy points a season ago came in three games. This means that he wasn't anywhere near the consistent performer some would have you believe. Despite finishing with the third-most fantasy points among quarterbacks last season, Wilson came in 23rd among quarterbacks in consistency. That's not a bet you should be willing to take in the third round.

Again, we have to look at value here. Are you okay passing up on high-upside options such as Carlos Hyde and Latavius Murray in order to nab Wilson? Why not go with Jay Cutler in the 12th round (ranked seventh in consistency last year) and nab one of those two running backs in Round 3?

3. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (ADP: 76)

Here's someone that will be a decent play in DFS games, but simply can't be relied on to be a consistent week-to-week performer. The enigmatic veteran put up just nine touchdown passes in eight road starts—furthering the idea that he struggles in open-air environments. He also ranked 15th in fantasy points and 22nd in consistency. If those aren't mid-tier QB2 numbers, I have no idea what are.

The issue here is that Stafford's ADP suggests he should be relied on as a top-12 fantasy quarterbacks. After all, no one with any idea of how fantasy football works would take a QB2 in the seventh round unless playing in a two-QB or super-flex league.

4. Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings (ADP: 119)

The loss of Phil Loadholt for the season is absolutely huge here. With Matt Kalil struggling at left tackle, pass protection will be an issue for Bridgewater. Though, there's no reason not to have confidence in Bridgewater to succeed here.

The larger issue at hand, at least from a fantasy perspective, is the return of Adrian Peterson after he missed all but one game last year. Fantasy football is all about opportunities. If he's existing in a strong run-first offensive attack, Bridgewater just won't have the same opportunities as others to succeed.

With an ADP in the 10th round, Bridgewater is either being relied on to be a low-end QB1 or top-end QB2 option depending on your draft strategy. I just can't justify selecting him over the likes of Joe Flacco, Colin Kaepernick and Jay Cutler, who will all be given more opportunities to put up fantasy points this season.
