Fantasy Football Slant: 10 Best Performances of Week 1

The first week of the NFL season has now come and gone and oh what a fun week it was. There were certainly some unexpected performances, good and bad in a week where not many could have predicted some of the Top-10 scorers this week.

This week's Top-10 scorers is made up by five quarterbacks, two tight ends, two wide receivers and one running back. Quarterbacks obviously are playing a major role in the scoring, but the only "elite" fantasy quarterbacks in this week's Top-10 are Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers

Now let's take a look at the Top-10 scorers this week.

1. Carlos Hyde, Running Back, San Francisco 49ers

Statistics: 26 carries, 168 rushing yards, two receptions, 14 receiving yards, two rushing touchdowns

Points: 30.2

Hyde took the stage in the last game of the week, but oh my did he put on a finale for the first week. Behind a 49ers' offensive line with significant turnover this offseason and facing a stout Vikings' defense, Hyde tore up Minnesota's defense for a 160-burger with two touchdowns. Hyde was explosive through the holes, tore through arm tackles and showed excellent vision on the night. San Francisco challenged him with a heavy workload.

It is important to not overreact to a small sample size, but there was certainly hype building on Hyde before the season and we saw this type of ability in spurts last year. With a matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on deck next week, Hyde could put up another top-10 performance,

2. Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots

Statistics: 25/32, 288 passing yards, four touchdowns

Points: 27.62

Brady was on the field for the NFL opener against the Steelers and he put on a tremendous performance. Pittsburgh occasionally was able to get some pressure on Brady, but its secondary was inept the entire night. Brady sliced through it drive after drive, looking for Julian Edelman or Rob Gronkowski and finding them, often times they were wide open. Brady may be getting up their in age but with the "chip" they are carrying on their shoulder, Brady could put up some big numbers in 2015.

3. Rob Gronkowski, Tight End, New England Patriots

Statistics: Five receptions, 94 yards, three touchdowns

Points: 27.4

Some questioned fantasy owners who spent a first-round pick on a tight end. Sure, it's Rob Gronkowski, but running backs are more valuable and you can get Jimmy Graham two rounds later. Just a week in, Gronkowski owners are ecstatic with the early return from their first-round pick. Gronkowski may have only had five receptions, but he torched the Steelers for three touchdowns and is uncoverable in the red zone, when Pittsburgh even tried to cover him. Gronkowski is the top tight end every week of the season.

4. Julio Jones, Wide Receiver, Atlanta Falcons

Statistics: Nine receptions, 141 receiving yards, two touchdowns

Points: 26.1

This is going to become a weekly theme, Jones is going to be a top-10 fantasy scorer most weeks in Kyle Shanahan's offense. Jones and Matt Ryan have built a chemistry for several years now and Jones has the game-changing ability whenever he touches the football. Thanks to his speed, savvy route running, great hands and an offensive coordinator who schemes the passing game around one receiver, more 120-plus yard, two-touchdown games are coming.

5. Carson Palmer, Quarterback, Arizona Cardinals

Statistics: 19/32, 307 passing yards, 14 rushing yards, three touchdowns

Points: 25.68

Coming off a torn ACL, there weren't a lot of fantasy owners excited about drafting a 35-year-old quarterback. That may prove to be a mistake as Palmer is a natural fit in Bruce Arians' offense and there are weapons around him to help him thrive. Against the New Orleans Saints, Arizona's offensive line gave Palmer time to throw and he had time to find guys like John Brown, Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson. He will put up some big numbers this year and can finish as a top-12 fantasy quarterback.

6. Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Tennessee Titans

Statistics: 13/16, 209 passing yards, four touchdowns

Points: 24.96

In the biggest surprise of the week, Mariota's NFL debut went about as perfect as you could draw it up. Tennessee tailored its offense around his skill set, emphasizing his athleticism, ability to throw on the move and quick decision making. Mariota went to work on a weak Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense, using his feet to draw linebackers and find his receivers over the middle at the vacated spot. On the day he finished with four touchdowns to just three completions. It will get more difficult as the season goes on and defenses attack in different ways, but fantasy owners could also see Mariota use his legs more and have 30-plus rushing yards in games.

7. DeAndre Hopkins, Wide Receiver, Houston Texans

Statistics: Nine receptions, 98 yards, two touchdowns

Points: 23.8

He may have Brian Hoyer throwing him passes, but Hopkins can always find a way to put up big numbers. This week he largely faced rookie cornerback Marcus Peters< who made some good plays of his own, but Hopkins ruled the day. He was targeted everywhere on the field and with an abundance of targets come lots of opportunities for fantasy points. He'll be a top-15 wide receiver all year.

8. Alex Smith, Quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs

Statistics: 22/33, 243 passing yards, 15 rushing yards, three touchdowns

Points: 23.22

While many like to spend up on the quarterback position in DFS or draft them early, you can still get some great results if you have patience and look for cheaper, valuable options. Smith took on the vaunted Houston Texans defense not an ideal matchup when J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney could destroy Kansas City's offensive line on their own to create pressure. Smith performed very well, utilizing Travis Kelce, Jeremy Maclin and Jamaal Charles as his primary weapons to move the ball down the field, using quick passes to mitigate the pressure.

There is still questions about his reliability as a fantasy quarterback and with a quick turnaround to Thursday Night Football against a tough Denver Broncos defense, he should be avoided next week.

9. Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback, Green Bay Packers

Statistics: 18/23, 189 passing yards, 35 rushing yards, three touchdowns

Points: 23.06

Of course Rodgers is among the top-10 scorers from the week. The best quarterback in the game faced off against one of the worst secondaries last year. Surprisingly, Rodgers threw for less than 200 yards, but it doesn't matter as much when you throw three touchdowns and add an additional 35 rushing yards. His mobility has once again returned, with his calf healed, now opening him up to pick up 10-20 rushing yards if needed.

A matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football seems brutal, but that defense showed it is not the same without Kam Chancellor. Rodgers should be in for another strong line against the Seahawks and deliver for fantasy owners.

10. Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Tight End, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Statistics: Five receptions, 110 yards, two touchdowns

Points: 23

There is nothing wrong with points from the ever magical "garbage time". Seferian-Jenkins could soon be a big time tight end, using his size and athleticism to become a fantasy monster. On Sunday we saw a glimpse of what he can do with Jameis Winston looking his way often as they tried to play catch up down three touchdowns to the Titans. Seferian-Jenkins took advantage of Mike Evans being held out, but he is an attractive fantasy tight end going forward.
