It was the final week of the regular season across fantasy football and it certainly offered its surprised. Week 13 was dedicated to quarterbacks, an entire week full of phenomenal performances by quarterbacks across the NFL with high-scoring games summarizing the day.
The top-10 performances from Week 13 consists of nine quarterbacks, 13 of the top-15 scorers from Week 13 are quarterbacks. It was also a high-scoring week with seven of the top-10 scorers scoring 30-plus points, in comparison there were seven players combined over Week 10-12 who scored 30-plus fantasy points.
Let's take a look at the top-10 performances from Week 13.
1. Cam Newton, Quarterback, Carolina Panthers
Stats: 28/41, 331 passing yards, 49 rushing yards, five passing touchdowns and one interception
Points: 36.14
This is the NFL's Most Valuable Player for 2015, it really shouldn't be a contest. While Newton was facing a cupcake matchup against a historically-soft New Orleans Saints defense, credit must be given for his performance given the circumstances.
Ted Ginn, the Panthers' top wide receiver, had multiple drops that likely cost at least an additional 70-plus yards and a touchdown, while Greg Olsen had some struggles and Carolina came out of the gate slow. While Newton got dinged up a bit during the game, he is a top-three fantasy quarterback the rest of the way and fantasy owners should have little concern for him being rested as the Panthers pursue a 16-0 season.
2. Marcus Mariota, Quarterback, Tennessee Titans
Stats: 20/29, 268 passing yards, 112 rushing yards, four total touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception
Points: 35.92
We've all been waiting to see Mariota turn on the jets and rip off a big run, but no one saw a 87-yard touchdown run coming. Mariota finished with 112 rushing yards and 17 fantasy points from his running ability, then pair that with three touchdowns and over 250 passing yards and the big game was there.
Mariota carries risk as a rookie quarterback and with upcoming matchups against the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Houston Texans, there aren't any soft matchups that you can point to and see for plenty of upside. The fact that Tennessee is letting him more run is a boost, but he isn't a top-15 quarterback who can count on for the fantasy playoffs.
3. Russell Wilson, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks
Stats: 21/27, 274 passing yards, 51 rushing yards, four total touchdowns (one rushing)
Points: 34.06
Wilson was a fantasy disappointment for much of the season but he has come through with big performances as of late. Following a five-touchdown performance against the Pittsburgh, Wilson went to work on the Minnesota Vikings and showed that he is going to be a fantasy force the rest of the way.
Seattle's upcoming schedule includes matchups against the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, two great matchups in the first and second round of the fantasy playoffs.
4. Ben Roethlisberger, Quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers
Stats: 24/39, 364 passing yards, 13 rushing yards and four passing touchdowns
Points: 33.86
The only question with Roethlisberger is if he can stay healthy, he has battled injuries throughout the year and there always seems to be a risk of something new popping up, but he is a top-four fantasy quarterback when he is out there. Against the Colts, Roethlisberger spread the ball around with great success, finishing with four touchdowns.
Roethlisberger's upcoming schedule isn't ideal, while the matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals could go back and forth, he will face a challenge against a stout Broncos' secondary in Week 15. If you are able to get through the next two weeks with him though and make it to the fantasy championship in Week 16, Roethlisberger's matchup against the Ravens is a fantasy gift.
5. Allen Robinson, Wide Receiver, Jacksonville Jaguars
Stats: 10 receptions, 153 receiving yards and three touchdowns
Points: 33.3
Robinson has been having a phenomenal season, but Sunday's performance was the icing on the cake for fantasy owners who drafted him. With Allen Hurns out of action, Robinson was targeted even more heavily by Blake Bortles and Robinson torched Jacksonville for three scores and surpassed 150 yards.
Robinson has two upcoming battles versus Vontae Davis and Desmond Trufant< but the volume of targets and his ability to make contested catches show he is a top-10 receiver and should be your WR1 going into the fantasy playoffs.
6. Blake Bortles, Quarterback, Jacksonville Jaguars
Stats: 24/36, 322 passing yards and five passing touchdowns
Points: 32.78
The Jaguars-Titans game certainly offered plenty to enjoy, two young quarterbacks going back and forth with scoring drives, punch for punch. Bortles may not have brought you any rushing yards but five touchdowns and 300-plus passing yards is nothing to complain about either.
Bortles is putting up strong numbers and after an ugly rookie season, the good has far outweighed the bad in 2015. Bortles has shown major improvement, with the help of improved weapons around him, putting himself on the map as a top-12 fantasy quarterback for the rest of the season.
7. Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots
Stats: 29/56, 312 passing yards, 36 receiving yards, four total touchdowns and two interceptions
Points: 31.78
This wasn't exactly one of Brady's sharpest games, he made a few poor decisions with the football and it cost the Patriots some points, but New England's biggest problems were a complete lack of a supporting cast who could hang on to the football. Brady still surpassed 300 passing yards, but it's the receiving yards that surprised everyone.
Obviously we won't see 36 receiving yards from him again, or even one receiving yard for that matter, the rest of the season. But the important thing is Brady put up top-10 fantasy numbers with nothing but an injured Danny Amendola and some backups to support him. If Rob Gronkowski is able to return Brady can still be a top-three fantasy quarterback for the playoffs, if not then he is more of a top-six quarterback.
8. Tyrod Taylor, Quarterback, Buffalo Bills
Stats: 11/21, 211 passing yards, 28 rushing yards, four total touchdowns (one rushing)
Points: 29.24
While Taylor may never be the quality of a passer of others on this list, his dual-threat ability makes him a fantasy playoffs starter in 12-team leagues. Against the Houston Texans, Taylor showed his shoulder is healthy and he can get the football to Sammy Watkins deep. With the defense now having to account even more for the deep ball and an improving running game, the offense opens up even more for Taylor to make plays with a nice fantasy schedule coming up.
9. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Quarterback, New York Jets
Stats: 36/50, 390 passing yards, 22 rushing yards and two passing touchdowns
Points: 25.8
Did you know Fitzpatrick is a Harvard graduate? Yeah it's a crazy thing, he also has a beard too. The bearded Harvard grad has turned into a reliable fantasy quarterback, something that is needed for fantasy teams with Matt Ryan, thanks to some great weapons around him.
Fitzpatrick is not just a one or two game guy who will mix in a great performance every four weeks with two bad weeks mixed in. There is some great talent around him and he is getting them the football on time and with accuracy, racking up the yards and touchdowns. With upcoming games against the Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys, you can keep counting on the quarterback with a beard.
10. Aaron Rodgers, Quarterback, Green Bay Packers
Stats: 24/36, 273 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, three total touchdowns (one rushing) and one interception
Points: 25.62
Oh how two plays can make a difference, especially so late in the fourth quarter. With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, fantasy owners weren't too happy with Rodgers' performance. He was under 200 passing yards had just one touchdown and things were looking dim.
But a 17-yard touchdown run, a rarity for Rodgers, gave fantasy owners an additional seven points. Then the miracle hail mary, on a play that never would have happened if not for a facemask penalty, resulted in a 61-yard touchdown to Richard Rodgers. Rodgers has not been the quarterback any of us are used to, at times lacking confidence in himself and the talent around him, perhaps Thursday's comeback will provide a boost for the offense and help turn things around from a fantasy perspective.
