The NFL never stops amazing fans with incredible performances coming each week that just make your jaw drop and fantasy football owners either cringe or rejoice. Week 7 was another lesson that you don't always have to spend up on the best quarterback in daily fantasy football or take a quarterback within the first five rounds in season-long leagues.
Week 7 showed some major bounce back performances, some major surprises and of course some stars. Let's take a look at the top-10 scorers for Week 7.
1. Lamar Miller, Running Back, Miami Dolphins
Statistics: 14 carries, 175 rushing yards, three receptions, 61 receiving yards and two total touchdowns
Points: 35.60
It's weird what happens when you have a talented running back and you give him the football. Perhaps Joe Philbin would still have a job if he experimented with it. Since making the change and hiring interim coach Dan Campbell, Miami's offense has made a much larger commitment to Miller and seen tremendous success.
Miller only needed the first half against the Houston Texans to put up over 230 total yards and two touchdowns. He made the big plays, including an 80-yard touchdown run and taking a screen pass 54 yards to the house. It will be a quick turnaround for Miller with a Thursday Night Football game, but he should do very well going forward.
2. Kirk Cousins, Quarterback, Washington
Statistics: 33/40, 317 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 15 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown
Points: 30.18
It's hard to believe this happened, but Cousins finished Week 7 as not only the highest-scoring quarterback, but the second-highest scorer overall. It's certainly something no one expected going into Sunday and even more so with less than eight minutes left in the second quarter when Washington trailed 24-0.
Cousins actually played well and anyone who had him in their lineup most certainly does like that. The big thing for this game was the return of tight end Jordan Reed, Cousins' favorite target. The matchup was extremely favorable and Cousins really isn't a fantasy option, but at least Reed is in position to put up more big numbers.
3. Tom Brady, Quarterback, New England Patriots
Statistics: 34/54, 355 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 15 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown
Points: 29.7
Even against a stout New York Jets defense, Brady put on an exhibit at quarterback. New England threw the ball a ton and could have had 40 completions if not for drops. He finished with 355 passing yards, mixing it up with a lot of looks to Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola. While Thursday Night Football games are typically not fantasy friendly, Brady remains a top-five fantasy quarterback.
4. Todd Gurley, Running Back, St. Louis Rams
Statistics: 19 carries, 128 rushing yards, four receptions, 35 receiving yards, two rushing touchdowns
Points: 28.3
The rookie has been unleashed on the NFL and it's been a fun three-week stretch. Over the past three games, Gurley has 433 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards, what makes his numbers even more impressive is that he has been a slow starter in the first quarter of games.
With upcoming games against the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens, Gurley is going to be a to-eight fantasy running back with the favorable second-half schedule. Expect to see him in this list pretty often going forward.
5. Ryan Tannehill, Quarterback, Miami Dolphins
Statistics: 18/19, 282 passing yards, four passing touchdowns
Points: 27.58
Tannehill was by far the most efficient fantasy quarterback this week, needing just 18 completions to score almost 28 fantasy points. Tannehill averaged 0.65 fantasy points per completion on Sunday and the numbers are even more shiny given it took him just one half to do so. But it's also important to note from Pro Football Focus that 246 of Tannehill's 282 yards came after the catch. While that type of success will be nearly impossible to achieve again the new Dolphins' offense can be exciting to watch and make Tannehill a top-12 fantasy quarterback.
6. T.Y. Hilton, Wide Receiver, Indianapolis Colts
Statistics: Four receptions, 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns
Points: 27
Sometimes it's just about the big plays with some of the top scorers, ripping off one or two breakaway plays that rack up the fantasy points. Hilton has been semi-productive this year, but fantasy owners have been awaiting that big game from the star receiver. All seemed quiet early, but Hilton broke free for a 87-yard touchdown and 46-yard touchdown in the second half. The big game fantasy owners were waiting for arrived and now with touchdowns in two straight games, Hilton, he should be a top-15 receiver the rest of the way.
7. Philip Rivers, Quarterback, San Diego Chargers
Statistics: 38/58, 336 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, two interceptions
Points: 25.44
Garbage time can be a blessing for fantasy owners. While San Diego trailed by three scores in the second half and all seemed lost for DFS players who had heavy shares of Rivers in their lineups, he came through with the garbage points. Rivers threw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and converted two two-point conversions, relying heavily on Ladarius Green and Danny Woodhead against the Raiders' prevent defense. Now with a tasty matchup upcoming against the Baltimore Ravens, Rivers will be a top-five fantasy quarterback once again this week.
8. Nate Washington, Wide Receiver, Houston Texans
Statistics: Nine receptions, 127 receiving yards and two touchdowns
Points: 24.7
Football is unpredictable most of the time and this just proves that. Everyone was excited for Hopkins against the Dolphins secondary, especially after the first half when it was assumed Houston would have to throw every play to try and play catch up as they trailed 41-0. But instead, Hopkins was quieted and Washington stepped up with the monster game.
Brian Hoyer found Washington the easier player to target and used him to march down the field, turning to him for big plays and in the red zone. It was just Washington's week, from a season-long perspective, there is no reason to trust him. The targets just aren't there and despite the big game, he should remain off the fantasy radar.
9. Arian Foster, Running Back, Houston Texans
Statistics: 18 carries, 59 rushing yards, five receptions, 66 receiving yards and two total touchdowns
Points: 24.5
This is one of the most unfortunate stories of the fantasy seasons. Foster worked extremely hard in the training room this year to return early and healthy from the torn groin muscle he suffered in training camp. He made it back and has been excellent the past three weeks, with 100-plus total yards in each of his last three games. He was used heavily out of the backfield as Houston attempted a comeback against Miami and it came at a high cost. Foster tore his achilles when Houston had no reason to keep their starters in the game. Now the 30-year-old running back faces nine months of more surgery and rehab, it might be the end of true effectiveness from Foster.
10. Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts
Statistics: 23/44, 333 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, three passing touchdowns, two interceptions
Just like with Rivers, garbage time was a blessing for anyone who had Luck in their lineup. Luck threw three touchdowns in the second half and racked up over 200 yards while the Colts tried to play catch up from trailing 27-0 late in the third quarter. The numbers were nice and the weapons are there to help keep Luck a major fantasy quarterback, but Sunday also showed something is still wrong with his arm. He is not playing close to his typical levels and on a bad Colts team, that could mean a lot of garbage points racked up this season.
