Looking at matchups is an important part of the process for setting lineups in fantasy football. You are always targeting that big running back against a weak front-seven or a receiver against a cornerback who gets burned, but there's more to it all.
The Las Vegas odds makers are some of the best in the business, they know the game and set lines accurately. There are two great BOVADA lines to look at from a fantasy perspective. The over/under for total points is a great indicator of how much of a high-scoring game a matchup will be. Games with an over/under of 48-plus are definitely the type of potential high-scoring shootouts we look for.
You can also obviously take a look at the line differential between the two teams. If there's a big differential, like a team being a full touchdown favorite, it's an indicator of a mismatch but also can indicate how the game could go. if the heavily-favored team jumps out to a huge lead, they will turn away from the passing game and just run the ball to wind down the clock. That could mean fewer opportunities for that team's quarterback and fantasy owner, but more opportunities for the trailing team's quarterback and receivers.
Now let's take a look at some of the most notable BOVADA lines and how we can examine them from a fantasy perspective.
Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles
O/U: 55
Line: -5, Philadelphia
Las Vegas sees a shootout coming between the Eagles and Cowboys, it's hard to blame them. While Dallas will be without Dez Bryant on Sunday, they are taking on an Eagles' secondary that was torched by Julio Jones for 141 receiving yards and allowed rookie Tevin Coleman to pick up 80 rushing yards. This is definitely a game where you can fire up plenty of Cowboys players in DFS.
The Eagles are the clear favorite in this game but in a potential shootout, that should still give Sam Bradford and Jordan Matthews plenty of opportunities to attack the slot. Matthews was strong last week and now faces a Cowboys' secondary without Orlando Scandrick. A more balanced offense with DeMarco Murray receiving more than 10 carries, could lead to a very big day for Bradford, Murray and Matthews.
Atlanta Falcons @ New York Giants
O/U: 51.5
Line: -2, New York
Here's another game where BOVADA sees a combined 50-burger, drawing the attention of fantasy players everywhere. Julio Jones and Matt Ryan are obvious must have players and Jones is a must on all DFS lineups this week. It should be a close game, which should give Coleman plenty of opportunities to run the football against a Giants' front-seven that was continuously pushed back versus the run last week.
From the Giants side of the ball, Rashad Jennings does have some risk after how well the Falcons' defense flew to the ball and shut down the run last week against the Eagles. But this team had issues last year versus the run, so Jennings is certainly not a player you must sit either. The Odell Beckham Jr. versus Desmond Trufant battle will be exciting two watch as two of the best, young players at their position go at it. The line shows a high-scoring game, but don't be surprised if Dan Quinn's defense has a solid performance.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New Orleans Saints
O/U: 47.5
Line: -10, New Orleans
Talk about a blowout, BOVADA is going all in with the Saints in this game, listing them as a 10-point favorite. It's great new for every Saints' skill-position player. Drew Brees could easily throw three-to-four touchdowns against a Tampa Bay secondary that was shredded by Marcus Mariota. If Brees is putting on a big game, expect Brandin Cooks to be a big part of that as well. If New Orleans gets up by multiple scores early, Mark Ingram will be fed the rock constantly and could deliver top-12 running back numbers.
For the Buccaneers, it will be another week where it is probably best for Doug Martin. Tampa Bay will get down early and ask Jameis Winston to make throw after throw, trying to catcc up to the high-powered Saints' offense. Mike Evans will be back and paired with Vincent Jackson, the two could have strong games. Keep an eye out on Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Winston's safety blanket, who could deliver in garbage time as well.
