Fantasy Football Week 16: Ranking the Quarterbacks

1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (TB)

In case you didn’t already know, the Buffalo Bills defense is really good. REALLY good. Yes, Rodgers had his worst game of the season against them, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to press the panic button on Rodgers or Green Bay’s offense. There’s certainly no reason to turn away from Rodgers at this point in the season, especially against a Buccaneers defense that will be without Gerald McCoy, their best defensive player.

Projected Statistics: 380 yards, three touchdowns

2. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (DAL)

Luck has had a propensity to turn the ball over the past few weeks, but with Peyton Manning slipping, Luck easily fits into the No. 2 spot. The Colts have all but abandoned the run at this point, and while the Colts don’t need to win this weekend (they already won the AFC South and it’s going to be impossible to catch the Broncos or Patriots) but because they’ve struggled to really impress the past two weeks against the Browns and Texans, Indy will want to regain some momentum heading into the postseason. Luck is the most consistent quarterback this year, per our advanced metrics, and will throw it a ton against a Dallas defense that has allowed the fourth most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks in the past four weeks, according to our fantasy against rankings.

Projected Statistics: 400 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions

3. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (ATL)

On a weekly basis, it’s basically impossible to pick what Brees and the Saints are going to do. But against an awful Falcons defense, I’d feel pretty comfortable rolling with Brees into a fantasy playoff game. He was Week 15’s top quarterback against the Bears, and if he wins, would basically lock up the division and would even put them into a position to rest their starters in Week 17 (if you can believe that). In the past four weeks, Atlanta has allowed the second most passing yards, and they are just as bad against running backs. New Orleans’ offense has a whole should cruise in this one.

Projected Statistics: 300 yards, three touchdowns

4. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (NYJ)

The last time Brady faced the Jets, he threw three touchdowns and no interceptions. There’s a very good chance that happens again this weekend. New York is a terrible defense, and the Patriots will still be trying to lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC for a bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. It’s simple to slate Brady in or a big day.

Projected Statistics: 260 yards, three interceptions

5. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (CHI)

When Stafford faced the Bears on Thanksgiving day, I predicted (correctly) that Stafford would have one of the best days of his season. He went on to score 21 fantasy points, a mark that should easily be met this week. Since that game, Chicago’s defense might have gotten even worse, as they have allowed the third most points to opposing quarterbacks in the past four weeks. Meanwhile, Stafford’s offense has only gotten more balanced, and Calvin Johnson has only improved. Stafford and the Lions are also back in the thick of the NFC North race with Green Bay’s loss to the Bills last weekend, which means there’ll be no reason for anyone to rest in this one.

Projected Statistics: 390 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

6. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (CIN)

Sorry, Peyton. This is by far the lowest I’ve had Manning ranked all season, but I can’t help but watch Broncos games the past three weeks and feel like they’re trying to hide him. There’s a number of reasons this could be the case: Manning could be injured, he could just be in a slump and the Broncos are legitimately trying to hide him, or Denver’s gameplan could be to just run the ball more often to save Manning for the playoffs. Any of these could be true, but there’s definitely a chance Manning is injured (aside from the flu he had to deal with Sunday). Still, there’s no way you’re benching Manning (unless you somehow own Stafford or Brady too), there’s just no way.

Projected Statistics: 360 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

7. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons (NO)

Even without Julio Jones, Ryan scored 20 points Sunday. Facing the easiest defense for quarterbacks in the past four weeks, he should have no problem getting there again, even if Jones misses again. It doesn’t matter if T.J. Yates came in to play this game, I would still feel OK about playing him against this Saints defense.

Projected Statistics: 365 yards, three touchdowns, one interception

8. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (IND)

Lob whatever jokes you want at Romo for him playing in December, but this man is on fire, and could very well take the Cowboys to an NFC East title. Romo has scored 20 points in each of his past two games, and has broken that mark in all but one of his past five starts. Dallas’ offensive line is good enough that they won’t just bail on the run if DeMarco Murray sits out, so this isn’t a ranking that just predicts Romo will throw it 40 times, I just think the offense is so good that he’ll keep up his recent scoring output.

Projected Statistics: 360 yards, three touchdowns, one fumble

9. Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles (WSH)

I suppose there’s a chance that Nick Foles starts this game, but just consider Sanchez and Foles interchangeable at this spot, they’re basically the same fantasy player in Philly’s offense. They would also both face Washington’s defense, which has been the second worst in the past four weeks against quarterbacks. Philadelphia will be anxious to get ahead early over the Redskins to feel comfortable about keeping up with the Cowboys in the division, and while Sanchez hasn’t been amazing with his decision making, he connects for enough big plays that it doesn’t matter in fantasy.

Projected Statistics: 280 yards, two touchdowns

10. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears (DET)

Put all the possible trade talk and Cutler jokes aside, he’s been a good fantasy quarterback this season. The Bears are throwing the ball a ton, and he’s thrown two touchdowns in each of his past three games. The turnovers continue to hamper him, but there’s no way Chicago is leading at any point in this game, which means he’ll be throwing it to Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett plenty.

Projected Statistics: 350 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions
