Fantasy Football Week 8: Ranking the Quarterbacks

1. Peyton Manning,  Denver Broncos (SD)

Had it not been for Russell Wilson’s amazing day, Manning would have been the top quarterback in Week 7. He threw for four touchdowns, and has yet to score less than 20 fantasy points in a game. There’s no reason why he won’t break that mark yet again against the San Diego Chargers.

Projected statistics: 340 yards, four touchdowns

2. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (NO)

Rodgers has nine touchdowns in his past three games, and is basically destroying teams single-handedly. That streak should continue against the Saints, who are allowing the eighth most points to opposing quarterbacks this season, per our fantasy against rankings (paid subscription required). He also has Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson to throw to, who are both ranked inside the top 10 fantasy receivers. There’s no way to go wrong with Rodgers.

Projected statistics: 280 yards, three touchdowns

3. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (PIT)

Even with Rodgers and Manning’s recent hot streaks, Luck is still the No. 1 quarterback in fantasy (given the fact that he’s yet to have a bye week). He’s had more games with either 300 yards or two touchdowns (seven) than anyone else in the league, per our consistency rankings, and have had plus-25 point games three times.

Projected statistics: 320 yards, two touchdowns

4. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks (CAR)

Wilson gets a huge bump this week for being the first quarterback ever to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 on Sunday. Even though the Seahawks lost to the Rams, Wilson was still a stud. He’s had two 100-yard rushing games, and has 10 passing touchdowns in six games. This week, he’s facing a Carolina team that allowed Rodgers to play so well against them that Matt Flynn came in at the end of the game.

Projected statistics: 250 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, eight carries, 40 rushing yards

5. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (DEN)

Rivers has recorded six games with at least two touchdowns, and four with at least three touchdowns. He had a down game in Week 7, for fantasy standards, but before that he had three games of 20 or more points. Denver’s defense has played well this season, but Rivers will have to throw to keep up with Manning in this one, especially in a Thursday night game where both defenses will likely be tired.

Projected statistics: 270 yards, three touchdowns

6. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions (ATL)

The Atlanta Falcons are worse than most people realize, and have allowed 15.7 points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Calvin Johnson might be back for this Week 8 matchup to help Stafford, who has struggled without him, and his rookie tight end Eric Ebron, who missed Sunday’s game well. Stafford could get both of them back healthy in a very easy matchup. No one for the Falcons can rush the quarterback. He’s only broken 300 yards once this season, but should throw plenty of touchdowns against the Falcons.

Projected statistics: 270 yards, three touchdowns, one interception

7. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (GB)

From a pure football perspective, Brees has struggled this season, and not enough people are talking about it. However, he’s only one of three quarterbacks to have 100 percent consistency, per our metrics. He still hasn’t been an elite fantasy quarterback, accounting for this drop. He just had his first 20-point game and threw three touchdowns in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s still a safe pick to score 16 or 17 so points this week in that offense. Jimmy Graham didn’t have a single reception on Sunday, so Brees’ production should even improve if he gets more snaps.

Projected statistics: 340 yards, two touchdowns, one interception

8. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (CHI)

After four terrible fantasy games, Brady has been on a three-game streak of 20 or more fantasy points, including a four-touchdown performance against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. As Rob Gronkowski continues to play more and more snaps, New England’s offense is improving, and so is Brady. He will continue his success against the Bears, who are now even without Kyle Fuller in the secondary. They officially have no one to cover opposing receivers.

Projected statistics: 230 yards, three touchdowns, one interception

9. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears (NE)

Cutler just had his worst performance of the year, but owners shouldn’t feel discouraged. Alshon Jeffery won’t have very many games with just one fantasy point, and Matt Forte continues to be the best safety valve in the league. Prior to Week 7, Cutler had two consecutive games of 21 points, and will get back on track against the Patriots, who have allowed 11 passing touchdowns.

Projected statistics: 340 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions

10. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (WSH)

Everyone is talking about how Dallas’ offensive line has helped DeMarco Murray this season, but Romo has been just as big of a beneficiary. He’s only lost one fumble all semester, and has been sacked just 12 times. That has allowed Romo to stay healthy and upright, leading to two 20-point games this season. He’ll go into a Monday night game facing Washington, who has allowed the most points to opposing quarterbacks this season.

Projected statistics: 290 yards, two touchdowns, one interception
