For the first time in a while this season, we’re without some serious quarterback talent due to bye weeks. Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan are just a few of the signal callers who have the week off, which throws off this week’s rankings, but this list should still be helpful in finding the right guy to play this week, even if you have a starter on bye.
1. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (NE)
Besides the Houston Texans (oddly enough) Manning has more touchdowns against the Patriots than any other team throughout his career, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com. Manning just seems to show up in games against Tom Brady. Even if this was any other game on Manning’s schedule, he’d be the top quarterback, but the rivalry makes it that much more important.
Projected Statistics: 320 yards, four touchdowns
2. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (NYG)
In case anyone forgot, Luck is still the top fantasy quarterback this season. Although Manning has had a bye and Luck hasn’t, Luck is 21 points ahead of Manning. He hasn’t scored less than 18 points in a game this year, and he’s surpassed 300 yards in all but one of his games. There’s absolutely no reason to have Luck ranked any lower than this.
Projected Statistics: 340 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions
3. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers (MIA)
Miami has actually been pretty effective against quarterbacks this season, but with the bye weeks, Rivers gets a boost. He’s had seven games (tied for second in the league) with at least 300 yards or two touchdowns, per our consistency metric (paid subscription required) and has just as many total fantasy points as Aaron Rodgers. Even with a recent string of interceptions, Rivers has thrown for 14 touchdowns in his past five games, and is a lock for three, if not more, against the Dolphins.
Projected Statistics: 290 yards, four touchdowns, one interception
4. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints (CAR)
For all the criticism Brees has drawn this season for poor decisions, his fantasy production has picked up as of late, and is going against a Carolina defense that is allowing the third most points to quarterbacks, according to our fantasy against rankings. This game is on the road for the Saints, which is usually bad news for Brees, but the Panthers just finishing allowing 418 yards to Rodgers. Brees will have an easy go of it this week, especially with Jimmy Graham close to 100 percent.
Projected Statistics: 310 yards, three touchdowns
5. Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles (HOU)
For as good as J.J. Watt has been this season, the Texans are still allowing about 15 points per game to opposing quarterbacks, and Foles has been the eighth most consistent quarterback this season. He’s turned it over six times in the past three games, but has cancelled that out with six touchdowns. Foles is also coming off of his best game of the year, and should carry that momentum into this weekend’s matchup.
Projected Statistics: 270 yards, three touchdowns
6. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks (OAK)
Wilson has had an up-and-down season for fantasy, but this is the easiest matchup he’ll face all year. Oakland probably won’t win a game this entire season, and Wilson will have an easy time protecting the ball. He’s had just three picks his entire season and has rushed for 100 yards in two separate games. Wilson will break the 20-point mark against a terrible Oakland team.
Projected Statistics: 290 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, eight carries, 40 yards
7. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers (STL)
If San Francisco wants to keep up with Arizona in the NFC West, San Francisco needs to win this one over the Rams, a team they played just three weeks ago. In that game, Kaepernick threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams have allowed the fifth most points to quarterbacks, and Kaepernick hasn’t had a multi-turnover game since Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. He’ll pick up some extra value as well on the ground.
Projected Statistics: 240 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, seven carries, 50 yards
8. Tom Brady, New England Patriots (DEN)
Brady’s been on a tear the past four weeks, so he’s made himself an every-week starter once again. However, his rankings dip just a bit against the Broncos, who are an average team in terms of points allowed to quarterbacks. I also expect the Patriots to try to control the clock in this game with the rushing attack to avoid Denver’s strong pass rush, but Brady is still a solid play.
Projected Statistics: 290 yards, two touchdowns
9. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (NO)
Don’t let the four-point game discourage you from using Newton this week. He was facing a strong Seattle defense, and the offensive line was not doing him any favors. Prior to last week, Newton had at least 200 yards in each of his past three games, and had a 33-point game in Week 6 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s also starting to run the ball more, going over double-digit carries in two of the past three games. New Orleans has also allowed the eighth most points to quarterbacks.
Projected Statistics: 220 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, seven carries, 40 yards, one rushing touchdown
10. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (ARI)
Note: This ranking was done prior to Romo’s injury in the Monday night game, and is pending any further announcements on his health.
Romo has multiple touchdowns in five straight games heading into the game against Washington, and before he left the game, he had 183 yards and a touchdown. If romo is cleared to play after what appeared to be a back injury, he will sneak in to the top 10 this week with all the byes.
Projected Statistics: 330 yards, two touchdowns, one interception
