Fantasy Football Week Two: Sit These Running Backs

Earlier today I focused on three running backs that you should consider starting this week. It is now time to take a skeptical approach and take a look at three players at this position you might want to avoid in week two.

While I love every single running back in this article, I am not sold on the matchups they face on Sunday.

So let’s take a gander.

Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

As much as I love Martin as a fantasy option this season, I just don’t see him making a huge impact against the New York Giants on Sunday. There are multiple reasons for this.

First, you can expect Tampa to be playing from behind in The Meadowlands. This will limit the touches that the Boise State product gets. Secondly, New York tends to struggle going up against more powerful backs. That seems to indicate we will see a little more of LeGarrette Blount than we saw last week against the Carolina Panthers.

While Martin could easily have a serviceable day, 80 rushing yards and a score, there are other options out there for you here. That being said, using Martin as a flex option could work out well. Just don’t expect him to be true RB1 this week.

Darren McFadden, Oakland Raiders

The Miami Dolphins defense wasn’t half bad in their disastrous season opener against the Houston Texans. In fact, Miami allowed a total of 83 rushing yards to Arian Foster, Ben Tate and Co. last week. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

I just don’t envision Oakland being able to get much going in the run game. Instead, they are going to look to open it up through the air with Carson Palmer in an attempt to exploit a weak Dolphins’ secondary.

Though McFadden was targeted an abnormal amount in the passing game against the San Diego Chargers on Monday, I just don’t see the Raiders going in that direction much against the Fins’.

DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys

Say what you want about the Seattle Seahawks performance against the Arizona Cardinals last week, their defense is among the best in the entire National Football League. A lot has been made about a secondary that boasts three Pro Bowl performers, but Seattle’s front four is absolutely scary to run against.

The combination of Brandon Mebane, Chris Clemons, Red Bryant and Alan Branch can leave a bruising for opposing running backs.

Expect Dallas to struggle getting it going on the ground in what promises to be a low scoring game. If that happens, Murray’s impact will be minimal.
