The Carolina Panthers had a disastrous go at it against the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome on Sunday. Not only did they yield 571 yards of total offense and 48 points, reigning NFL MVP Cam Newton had to leave the game with a head injury.
It came on a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarterback. And in reality, it was a hit Newton did not need to take.
After looking woozy following the play, Newton was taken to the locker room to go through the concussion protocol. He did not return.
It took a while for the Panthers to confirm what many believed, but shortly after the game concluded the team announced that Newton did indeed suffer a concussion.
There's obviously a lot to look at from a fantasy perspective here.
Carolina does have an extra day of rest before taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Monday night. It would be a game Newton might anticipate dominating considering the Bucs' performance on defense thus far this season.
Though, this is now the second time that Newton himself has had to go through the concussion protocol. Remember, he was battered and bruised in Carolina's Week 1 loss to the defending champion Denver Broncos.
That's surely going to play a role here.
We can't really look at this through a season-long lens. Unless it's one of those concussions that lingers for an extensive period of time, Newton likely won't be sidelined for too long. Instead, you might just have to rely on your QB2 in Week 5.
From a DFS perspective, there's a lot at play here. Both Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen are aided a lot by Newton's superior ability to get the ball to them. If it is indeed Derek Anderson under center in Week 5, their fantasy production promises to be impacted.
As it is, we will definitely keep you updated on this injury and how Newton handles the protocol this week.
