With Golden Tate signing a five-year deal with the Detroit Lions, does the Detroit franchise finally have a number two receiver to pair with Calvin Johnson?
For what the Lions are paying Tate, he should definitely see his fair share of targets, and in a pass-happy offense that is all fantasy owners could ask. Tate could be the beneficiary of Megatron being double-teamed, and that is good news for those who own Tate in fantasy football.
Last year, Tate was able to accrue 64 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns in a run-first offense in Seattle. There is no reason to believe he will not get well over 1000 yards with the Lions, here's why:
The Lions number two receivers in the last five years have played 970, 620, 997, 880, and 872 snaps. The number one receiver (Calvin Johnson) has played 1000 or more snaps in nearly all of those seasons. Golden Tate will be the number two, but the clear cut number two. Meaning, he will be on the field for every single snap with two receivers should he play in all 16 games. Golden Tate played the most snaps of any wide receiver for the Seahawks last season at 790 snaps.
Pro-rated to 950 snaps, last year's production for Tate would yield 77 catches for 1078 yards and six touchdowns. Not bad for a wide receiver two. But, remember how Seattle's offense ran compared to Detroit's. The Seahawks threw the ball 407 times, and the Lions threw the ball 634 times. That is over a 33% increase in terms of passing plays for Tate this season, and he should have a monster year.
Tate was Russell Wilson's top target, and Matthew Stafford will be looking towards Megatron more often than Tate. But, without question, this will be the biggest opportunity for Golden Tate to put up a massive statistical season for the Lions. Expect over 100 targets for 75 catches, 1200 yards and eight touchdowns. Or in fantasy terms, a very good WR2.
Buy Golden Tate, and reap the benefits.
