Fantasy Impact: Jets Release Brandon Marshall

Brandon Marshall's two-year stint with the New York Jets came to an end on Thursday evening when the team released the 32-year old receiver at his own request.

Marshall has long been on the chopping block in New York after putting up 788 yards and three scores in 15 games last season. It's just the third time in his 11-year NFL career that Marshall has failed to reach the 1,000-yard plateau.

From a fantasy perspective, none of this really means that Marshall is an irrelevant option moving forward. We must remember that he was working with a trio of quarterbacks in Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty who combined to throw 16 touchdowns compared to 25 interceptions. Marshall's lack of success was more indicative of that than anything else.

Remember, the former Pro Bowl receiver tallied 109 receptions for 1,502 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns when Fitzpatrick played halfway decent football the previous season. Give Marshall an above-average quarterback, and he's likely to hit 1,000-plus yards again in 2017.

When looking at the Jets, everything remains up in the air. The team doesn't have a starting quarterback on the roster, it released two of its five starting offensive linemen and there's really nothing to speak of at tight end. It really is like an extension team on offense.

Assuming New York somehow finds a reliable quarterback under center, youngster Quincy Enunwa is someone to keep an eye on. He put up 58 receptions for a team-high 857 yards this past season.
