With an exception of Carlos Hyde, the San Francisco 49ers offense has been pretty irrelevant from a fantasy football perspective. Heck, it's been pretty irrelevant through every lens heading into Week 6.
That could now potentially change with news that the 49ers have benched an ineffective Blaine Gabbert for the enigmatic Colin Kaepernick.
In five starts thus far this season, Gabbert has not done a darn thing to prove that he should have held on to the starting job. He's completing just 58 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and six interceptions. This has led to a 69.6 quarterback rating heading into Week 6.
While Kaepernick himself failed to impress in his last extended time under center, he offers substantially more upside than Gabbert from a fantasy perspective.
If nothing else, running the read-option out of Kelly's spread offense could potentially help Hyde succeed even more on the ground. It will likely open up more running holes, especially with Kaepernick posing more of a threat to run.
It could also open up what had been a non-existent down-field passing game. In this, Torrey Smith could become a factor for the first time this season. Smith has caught just 9-of-23 passes for 106 yards through five games. Those are unacceptable numbers for a player that's considered the team's No. 1 receiver. They also speak to Gabbert's inability to do anything of substance down the field.
From a year-long fantasy perspective, it's important to take a wait-and-see approach here. As it relates to DFS contests, Kaeperinck might be an under-the-radar value play. He comes in as the second-cheapest quarterback in FanDuel contests and it taking on a Bills defense that has yielded an average of nearly 280 passing yards per game on the season.
