It was announced on Tuesday that the Washington Redskins will use the exclusive rights franchise tag on Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins.
This means that no other team can negotiate with Cousins once free agency hits next month. Normally, this would also mean that Cousins would be a lock to return to the Redskins.
Though, various reports suggest that there's a possibility a trade can be worked out between Washington and the San Francisco 49ers for the 28-year-old quarterback.
San Francisco is looking to the trade market for a quarterback, the team's new head coach Kyle Shanahan is Cousins' former offensive coordinator in D.C. And a recent report suggests that San Francisco is the only other squad outside of the Redskins that Cousins would sign an extension with.
As it relates to the fantasy football world, a return to D.C. for Cousins would likely be the best-case scenario here.
While DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon are both free agents, Cousins has had a tremendous amount of statistical success with the Redskins over the past two seasons, throwing for nearly 9,000 yards with 63 total touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He's also finished as a top-eight fantasy quarterback each of those two seasons.
Cousins is expected to sign the franchise tag tender, but that doesn't mean a trade won't go through with San Francisco. Instead, it could be more of a procedural thing to facilitate a trade. Stay tuned, more to come here.
