Fantasy Implications: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bench Josh Freeman

Unless you subscribe to the late-round quarterback philosophy and have taken that to the next level, you weren't really relying on Josh Freeman to be your QB1 option for the vast majority of the 2013 season. If you were, a recent report from ESPN's Adam Schefter indicating that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched Freeman in favor or rookie Mike Glennon will probably sting a little bit. Not like you were going to contend with Freeman as your QB1 in the first place.

Freeman's struggle have been well known. He has been the most turnover-prone quarterback in the NFL over the past two-plus seasons, which is a feat in of itself considering that Mark Sanchez has actually started for a majority of that time.

But I digress.

Freeman was seen as nothing more than a decent QB2 option in standard leagues with a little more upside in dynasty leagues because of the talent he had on offense and his previous success. There will be some that will have to go out there and find a replacement for Freeman either via the trade block or on the waiver wire, especially considering that bye's start this week.

Fret not, there are some options out there.

If you are in a tight spot by having either Cam Newton or Aaron Rodgers as your QB1, you have to act fast.

New Cleveland Browns starter Brian Hoyer finished as the 12th-ranked fantasy quarterback last week after throwing for 321 yards and three scores against the Minnesota Vikings. Hoyer has limited upside Week 4, as he'll be going up against a stout Cincinnati Bengals defense. Hoyer is currently owned in just one percent of ESPN leagues.

Interestingly enough, Alex Smith and Ryan Tannehill haven't received a lot of play after early-season success. Smith is currently eDraft's 12th-ranked fantasy quarterback through three weeks, but is owned in less than 40 percent of ESPN leagues. Far be it for me to question the logic of fantasy owners, but why the heck did you own Freeman over Smith in the first place? Kansas City takes on a weak New York Giants defense on Sunday. If you can nab him as your QB2 and spot starter, DO IT right now.

In terms of dynasty leagues, I am pretty sure you had a better long-term option on your roster than Freeman. His benching really shouldn't impact your plans too much. It'll be interesting to see where he catches on when he hits free agency this upcoming offseason. The talent is there, Freeman just needs to get his act togeter.
