The NFL offseason and free agency period won't officially get off to a start until next week, but there's already a ton of news floating around the football world.
Let's take a quick look at fantasy-relevant information as the NFL offseason gets going in a big way.
Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors
The New England Patriots are reportedly dead set against trading backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Though, it must be noted that releasing said information through the media is more of a ploy to acquire value than anything else.
Garoppolo, who performed well in Tom Brady's stead in the first two games of the 2016 NFL season, is set to become a free agent following next year. If New England can get a first-round pick in return, it will surely look to move him. Both the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns are said to be interested.
Kirk Cousins Franchised
The Washington Redskins placed the franchise tag on Cousins for the second consecutive year on Tuesday. This time, the team gave him the exclusive tag, meaning no other squad can negotiate with him when free agency starts next week.
With that said, there's still a scenario in play here that suggests Washington will trade Cousins. The quarterback's former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers are said to be interested in a potential trade here.
Bengals Willing to Listen on A.J. McCarron
McCarron might not receive as much press as Garoppolo and Cousins, but he surely could be a starting quarterback in the NFL. In this, the Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly willing to listen to offers for the fourth-year pro out of Alabama.
It's not yet known what it might take to pry McCarron from the Bengals, but the bounty will be a lot cheaper than the other two quarterbacks mentioned here.
Adrian Peterson
For the first time in his 10-year NFL career, this future Hall of Fame running back will be on the free-agent market. That came on Tuesday when the Minnesota Vikings decided against picking up the $18 million option on Peterson for the 2017 season.
Already showing interest in Peterson are the Oakland Raiders and New York Giants. Both teams are in need of a starting running back, which makes them reasonable potential landing spots. Peterson is said to want to play with an established quarterback. With Derek Carr and Eli Manning respectively, the Raiders and Giants fit that criteria.
Peterson played in just three games this past season due to injury after leading the NFL in rush attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2015.
Jamaal Charles Looking for a Contender
Released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, Charles is said to be looking to latch on with a Super Bowl contender. Electric when healthy, Charles has played just eight games over the past two seasons. It remains to be seen what the market might be for him, but there should be some solid interest.
From a practical and scheme standpoint San Francisco might make some sense. Charles could fill the role of a Devonta Freeman in Shanahan's offense. Though, the 49ers are not contenders for even a playoff spot over the short term. Instead, look for Dallas, New York (G), New England and potentially Seattle to come calling.
Three Teams Already in on Alshon Jeffery
When the Chicago Bears decided against placing the franchise tag on Jeffery this week, it became readily apparent that he would be the top receiver on the free agent market.
Now, it looks like Tennessee, Philadelphia and San Francisco all have interest in the former Pro Bowl receiver. Despite two consecutive substandard seasons and after a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's PED policy last year, Jeffery will be a highly-coveted free agent.
We'll continue to provide rumors and information from a fantasy perspective as NFL free agency gets going.
