Fantasy Slant: 49ers Release WR Torrey Smith

Coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him record just 20 receptions for 267 yards and three touchdowns, Torrey Smith is no longer a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

He was officially released by San Francisco on Tuesday just two seasons into the five-year, $40 million contract he signed with the team back in 2015.

Smith is partially to blame for his lack of production in San Francisco, but it really was the team's quarterback situation that held him back. The combination of Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick threw just 37 touchdowns over the past two seasons.

Smith did, however, lead the NFL with an average of over 20 yards per reception in 2015.

Should he go to a team with a better quarterback situation, we could be talking about some sort of fantasy relevance in larger leagues moving forward.
