According to multiple media reports, the San Francisco 49ers will sign soon-to-be former Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon once free agency officially opens on Thursday. The contract will apparently be front-loaded, paying the 30-year-old veteran $16 million for the 2017 season.
This comes on the heels of San Francisco releasing Torrey Smith. It also comes at a time when the team doesn't have a single quarterback under contract after Colin Kaepernick opted out of his deal earlier this month.
Garcon has been ultra productive in the NFL and is coming off a tremendous 2016 campaign that saw him record 79 receptions for 1,041 yards. Depending on what happens here, Garcon will act as the 49ers' No. 1 receiver.
From a fantasy perspective, there's not much to look at until the team's quarterback situation is settled. San Francisco has been linked to Kirk Cousins in a potential trade with the Washington Redskins. Adding Cousins' soon-to-be former teammate could add to more speculation here. That's only magnified by Kyle Shanahan's presence on the 49ers as their new head coach. Shanny acted as Cousins' offensive coordinator in Washington during the quarterback's first two seasons in the NFL.
We'll have to take a wait-and-see approach before ultimately determining Garcon's fantasy value, but he's surely a WR2 option as of right now.
