Fantasy Slant: Biggest Quarterback Disappointments Through Week 3

In the article we ran on Tuesday focusing on the five biggest fantasy surprises from the quarterback position, it was alarming to see those ranked among the top players at this position. More so than the surprises, we were shocked to see certain veteran signal callers missing from the list.

Today's article is going to check in on the five-most disappointing fantasy quarterbacks through three weeks. We will make a point of not including the multitude of players at this position currently riding the pine due to injury. Instead this article will focus on those who have suited up for all three of their team's games thus far.

1. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts

Stats: 56.0 completion percentage, 753 passing yards, five touchdowns, seven interceptions (42.62 fantasy points)

Luck's best fantasy performance of the season came last week against the Tennessee Titans. Even then, he finished as our 15th-best fanasy quarterback. With a preseason ADP between the second and third round, this just isn't acceptable. What makes it even more disturbing is the fact that Luck leads NFL quarterbacks with eight turnovers. Any time you get negative points from this position on that scale, it's probably not a good thing for your fantasy team.

Luck showed signs in the Colts comeback against Tennessee this past Sunday, throwing two fourth quarter touchdowns. He also has a game coming up against a generally weak Jacksonville Jaguars defense this week. That should be telling. If Luck continues to struggle at the clip he is right now (22nd among fantasy quarterbacks), those of us who picked him up earlier could be left wondering what could have been.

2. Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos

Stats: 63.8 completion percentage, 755 passing yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions (44.0 fantasy points)

Most fantasy observers believed Manning was going to struggle from a fantasy perspective this season. With Gary Kubiak coming in to install a new run-based offensive attack, the opportunities just weren't going to be there. Unfortunately for the Broncos, their running game has been a disaster through three weeks (31st in the NFL).

This has led to Manning attempting over 40 passes in each of the Broncos' first three games. Still, he's only the 18th-ranked fantasy quarterback on the season. More than anything, that has to be alarming for those of you relying on him as a QB1.

3. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

Stats: 70.3 completion percentage, 692 passing yards, 137 rushing yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions (53.38 fantasy points)

Wilson hasn't necessarily played bad football this season. The biggest issue has been Seattle forcing itself to strip down the offense in order to overcome bad offensive line play. That, and the struggles of Jimmy Graham before his breakout performance in Week 3.

More than this, the biggest issue fantasy-related here was the preseason expectations that had Wilson as a third-round pick in standard 12-team leagues. Outside of the simple fact that selecting any non-elite fantasy quarterback there is a joke, his upside didn't dictate such a high draft position. Through Week 3, Wilson is the 10th-ranked fantasy quarterback and hasn't finished better than ninth in a given week.

4. Sam Bradford, Philadelphia Eagles

Stats: 62.4 completion percentage, 678 passing yards, three touchdowns, four interceptions (29.82 fantasy points)

It's not that Bradford went high in preseason drafts. Instead, it's all about the fact that his rising ADP throughout the summer suggested that many were relying on him as a bottom-end QB1. Through Week 3, Bradford is the 27th-best fantasy quarterback. In fact, he's put up less points over the course of the season than three quarterbacks tallied in Week 3 alone.

Without putting up a ranking better than 19th thus far this season, it's about time for us to bench Bradford and replace him with whoever we have as a viable starter in that QB2 category. It's gotten to that point.

5. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers

Stats: 64.8 completion percentage, 567 passing yards, 138 rushing yards, three touchdowns, four interceptions (42.48 fantasy points)

Ouside of the 26.50 points Kaepernick put up in Week 2, the 49ers quarterback is averaging eight points per game. That was obviously impacted by a four-interception Week 3 performance that saw Kaepernick put up a total of 5.28 points.

This much maligned signal caller wasn't a QB1 option in the first place, but he's going to need to put up some decent numbers moving forward if he's going to be rosterable in 12-team leagues.
