Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones has reportedly signed with the Detroit Lions in free agency. The deal is said to be worth $40 million over five seasons.
Jones is now going to have some rather large shoes to fill following Tuesday's retirement of future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson.
But what does this mean from a fantasy perspective for both Jones and his new Lions' teammates?
The largerst trickle-down effect has to be Golden Tate, who was set to be valued at a ridiculously high clip around the fake football world.
Tate has put up 199 receptions over the past two seasons. But that very same span has seen him average 136 targets per season — numbers that aren't necessarily going to go up too much now that Jones is in the mix. Interestingly, Tate has also recorded just 10 touchdowns on those 272 targets during this span.
As it relates to Jones, his fantasy value automatically increases. Unlike Cincinnati, Detroit doesn't have a true No. 1 receiver. The expectation here has to be that neither Jones nor Tate will fill that role. Instead, it's going to be more of a committee thing for a Lions offense that has been pass friendly under Matthew Stafford.
Jones put up career high numbers in targets (103), receptions (65) and yards (816) this past season in Cincinnati. All of these numbers should increase in Detroit. In fact, Jones' target numbers are likely going to be closer to 140 moving forward. This puts him in the conversation to be a mid-tier WR2 option when all is said and done.
