In what can't be considered too much of a surprise, the Cleveland Browns have named Robert Griffin III the team's Week 1 starter. While some had figured that Griffin III would be battling with Josh McCown and rookie Cody Kessler for the starting gig, it became apparently early in camp that first-year head coach Hue Jackson was leaning in the direction of the enigmatic former No. 2 pick.
Griffin III jumped on to the scene as a rookie in 2012, leading Washington to a division title while tallying 27 total touchdowns compared to five interceptions. That was good enough for him to rank fifth among quarterbacks in fantasy points.
Though, a late-season ACL injury really hampered any progress the Redskins had hoped he'd make moving forward. RGIII struggled a great deal the following season, throwing 16 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions in 13 starts. He then split time with Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins as the Skins starter during the 2014 season, eventually finding himself inactive for every game last season.
Griffin III, a former Heisman winner at Baylor, still boasts considerable upside in Jackson's quarterback-friendly offense. Though, there are many reasons to avoid him as a late-round QB2 option in 12-team leagues.
First off, the Browns' lack of talent on offense should be concerning. Josh Gordon is suspended for the first four games of the season, leaving rookie first-round pick Corey Coleman as the team's top receiver. Meanwhile, Cleveland lost last year's top pass catcher, Travis Benjamin, to the San Diego Chargers in free agency. Add in the departures of offensive linemen Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz, and it's readily apparent this unit will struggle in 2016.
Our recommendation here is to see how well RGIII performs early in the season. If he's proven to be healthy and has somehow found a way to rebound from a disastrous past three seasons, he might be worth a waiver-wire pickup. Though, that seems highly unlikely at this point.
