Former Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, who earned seven Pro Bowl appearances in his 12 seasons with the team, announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday.
Briggs, 34, had met with the San Francisco 49ers and drew interest from other teams after the Bears decided not to re-sign him following an injury-plagued last couple seasons. However, it appears that no team expressed a real interest in bringing him aboard.
In announcing his retirement, Briggs also expressed excitement over the start of a post-football career as an analyst for CSN Chicago:
"I’m excited to continue my partnership with Comcast SportsNet,” Briggs said. “I’ve had the good fortune of being a part of this network over the past few years. I credit Pat Boyle who immediately made me feel at home here and I always told him I wanted to be here after my career. It’s just a great atmosphere and I love being surrounded by some really great people. This was the right decision for me.”
Teaming up with Brian Urlacher for the better part of his career in Chicago, Briggs was among the most underrated linebackers in the game. He recorded 100-plus tackles eight times during a nine-year span prior to falling off the cliff back in 2013. During that span, Briggs earned seven Pro Bowl trips while recording 13 forced fumbles and 14 interceptions.
He leaves the NFL as a borderline Hall of Famer.
